NEW YORK (Oct. 6, 2012) Sailors assigned to the guided-missile destroyer USS Michael Murphy (DDG 112) run aboard the ship to man the rails and bring the ship to life during its commissioning ceremony. The new destroyer honors the late Lt. (SEAL) Michael P. Murphy, a New York native who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat as leader of a four-man reconnaissance team in Afghanistan. Murphy was the first person to be awarded the medal for actions in Afghanistan, and the first member of the U.S. Navy to receive the award since the Vietnam War. The ship will be based in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The U.S. Navy has a 237-year heritage of defending freedom and projecting and protecting U.S. interests around the globe. NAVAL AIR STATION PATUXENT RIVER, Md. (Oct. 4, 2012) BF-17, part of the third lot of Low Rate Initial Production (LRIP 3) F-35B Lightning II aircraft, arrives at Naval Air Station Patuxent River. BF-17 will temporarily add to the complement of F-35B and F-35C test aircraft at the F-35 Integrated Test Facility before heading to its ultimate destination at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif. The F-35B is the variant of the Joint Strike Fighter designed for use by the Marine Corps, as well as F-35 international partners in the United Kingdom and Italy. The F-35B is capable of short take-offs and vertical landings to enable air power projection from amphibious ships, ski-jump aircraft carriers and expeditionary airfields. NAVAL WEAPONS STATION SEAL BEACH, Calif. (Oct 13, 2012) Retired Marine Corps Master Sgt. Emanuel Caesar is presented with the Congressional Gold Medal by U.S. Rep. Laura Richardson in a ceremony at Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach. Caesar, a Montford Point Marine, was one of the first African-American recruits trained at Montford Point Camp during World War II. Monford Point was the only boot camp that black recruits were authorized to attend until July 1948, when President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981, ending segregation. And it's the Same Gun mounted in both the LAV25 Scout vehicle used by the USMC as well as the M2/M3 Bradly in US Army service
