PHILLPINES SEA (June 14, 2023) – The Independence-variant littoral combat ship USS Manchester (LCS 14) transits the Philippines Sea during Exercise Pacific Griffin 2023. Pacific Griffin 2023 is the fourth iteration of the biennial maritime exercise between the U.S. and Republic of Singapore. Conducted in the waters near Guam, the two navies enhance combined maritime proficiency while strengthening relationships during two weeks of dynamic training evolutions ashore and at sea. Littoral Combat Ships are fast, optimally manned, mission-tailored surface combatants that operate in near-shore and open-ocean environments, winning against 21st-century coastal threats. Manchester, part of Destroyer Squadron 7, is on a rotational deployment operating in the U.S. 7TH Fleet area of operations to enhance interoperability with Allies and partners and serve as a ready-response force in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. SAN DIEGO (June 28, 2023) The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) arrives in San Diego concluding a seven-month deployment to the U.S. 3rd and 7th Fleet areas of operation. Nimitz's presence in U.S. 3rd and 7th Fleet reinforced the United States' commitment to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. WASHINGTON (June 28, 2023) A graphic rendering of the future guided-missile frigate USS Lafayette (FFG 65). The ship is named in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette and his service during the American Revolutionary War. Lafayette is the fourth of the new Constellation-class frigates, scheduled to commission in 2029. PACIFIC OCEAN (July 27, 2023) Sailors assigned to the amphibious transport dock ship USS John P. Murtha (LPD 26) and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Expeditionary Support Unit 1 launch the Vehicle Advanced Demonstrator for Emergency Recovery, or VADR, during Underway Recovery Test (URT) 10, July 27, 2023. VADR is a replica of the crew module that will be used during Artemis II. In preparation for NASA's Artemis II crewed mission, which will send four astronauts in Orion beyond the Moon, NASA and the U.S. Navy will conduct a series of tests to demonstrate and evaluate the processes, procedures, and hardware used in recovery operations for crewed lunar missions.
