I have seen a documentary about the lives of sailors on those carriers. Is it true that the mess halls serve lobsters and steaks everyday, or something equivalent? the food seems pretty insane. God, I want to join the USN just for the food.

You must have seen "Carrier" on PBS... excellent program..USN ships do not have mess halls..they are called mess decks. The quality of the food varies from ship to ship. 20 years ago when I was on the Nimitz we had steak and lobster about three times a week. The other ships I served on had steak and lobster about twice a month or so. My son who served the USN from '98 to '07 spent four years at sea. The ships he served on a DD & CG had steak frequently but lobster? Only a few times.

By the way a person should only join the US Navy if they are willing to serve.

Are you allowed to chuck a line out for a bit of fishing , if you are off duty?;)
BTW I once read, the reason why JFK lost his patrol boat was due to slackness on his part. Would that be True?

The first question answer is at sea > no fishing. In port fishing was allowed depending on the local authorities approving it.

On the second question I'd say that's a falsehood. Those are just rumors by JFK bashers...of which there are plenty.
