Jeff,...ahh...I do not mean to embarrass you.... that's not in San Diego. I believe that is GW in Norfolk VA on the Charles River some years ago. Do a Google search of that image to check it out.

The flight deck was clear when GW departed San Diego..except for a few wayward sailors...

No problem, Popeye.

Some reporter used the wrong picture and I fell for it because it was such a nice pic of the Washington.

I took it down, and replaced it with an accurate picture. Thank you for the correction.

Whether or not the ships, CVN's, would be allowed passage through a canal in Nicaragua would be an agreement between the US and Nicaragua.

The new Panama Canal locks will allow a Nimitz to pass.

Length: 366 m (1,200 ft)
Width: 49 m (161 ft)
Draft: 15.2 m (50 ft)

The NImitz beam at the waterline is 134 ft. and the draft is a max of 41 ft.

As I understand it, they will allow for the wider, deck overhang too.

Canal Port Vision said:
When completed, the project will handle post-Panamax ships -- the supertankers (Suezmax liquid-bulk tankers), modern US Navy aircraft carriers, the largest container ships, and liquefied natural gas carriers, that are now unable to transit the Panama Canal.

So the Nicaraguan canal will be a moot point for US Carriers anyway in all likelihood.

I feel there may be some sort of agreement between the two countries because the ships are nuclear powered. Do nuke subs transit the Panama canal? I don't know.
