ARLINGTON, Va. (Aug. 17, 2009) Members of the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Guard render honors during a military funeral for retired Navy Capt. Laurie Mosolino, a U. S. Navy Medical Corps nurse, at Arlington National Cemetery. Mosolino provided care to thousands of patients and made profound and lasting contributions throughout the world during her career as a general surgeon. PERSIAN GULF (Aug. 17, 2009) The Cyclone-class coastal patrol ship USS Typhoon (PC 5) pulls alongside the Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate USS Thach (FFG 43) for a fueling at sea. This event marks the first time Thach has performed a fueling at sea with a coastal patrol ship. Thach is part of the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group and is on a routine deployment in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility. STRAIT OF MAGELLAN (Aug. 15, 2009) The amphibious assault ship Makin Island (LHD 8) sails easterly through the Strait of Magellan as the ship prepares to enter the Pacific Ocean. Makin Island departed Pascagoula, Miss., July 10 and is currently circumnavigating South America to its new homeport in San Diego. KETCHIKAN, Alaska (Aug. 07, 2009) The Office of Naval Research E-Craft, an experimental high-speed transformable hull form vessel, is under construction at Alaska Ship and Drydock in Ketchikan, Alaska. The E-Craft is scheduled for delivery in April 2010 and will provide the Navy with valuable data on the performance of this unique hull form in a challenging environment while serving as a ferry connecting Anchorage, Alaska, to the remote area of Port Mackenzie. HONOLULU (Aug. 14, 2009) The Office of Naval Research small waterplane area twin-hull oceanographic research ship R/V Kilo Moana takes part in the second Radiance in a Dynamic Ocean (RaDyO) program, an at-sea research experiment in Honolulu. Twenty-five researchers from the US, Canada, Poland and Australia participated in the RaDyO experiment. NORFOLK (Aug. 17, 2009) The USS Dawes (FFG-53) sits moored at the Naval Supply Systems Command Fleet and Industrial Supply Center(SSCFISC) in Norfolk, Va. On August 17, 2009 SSCFISC issued more than 1,116,000 gallons of fuel to four ships, 58 U.S. Navy aircraft, six Air Mobility Command aircraft, and various other Department of Defense activities.
