Think 2012 was a major year for the PLA? If so, then better prepare for 2013.

From the same site that leaked the Type 055:

1. 1. 055 large missile destroyer

The 12,000-ton destroyer will be the second largest in the world.

Planning of the destroyer began in the 1970s, but due to lack of funds and military technology, it was turned into a preparatory research project in 1981.

However, due to the need for a main battle warship for China’s aircraft carrier combat group, research and development for the destroyer have resumed.

The report gives details of its comprehensive combat capability and most advanced equipment and expects that construction of the warship will begin at the end of this year.

2. Next generation of multi-functional medium-range missiles that will perhaps be named DF-25 and DF-26 with range respectively of 2,500-3,500 km and 4,500-5,000 km.

The report says, with variation DF-26 can be an ASBM or if another stage of engine is added to it, a midget ICBM. If the nuclear warhead of the ICBM is replaced by a KKV, it can be used to kill a satellite or intercept a missile and if the KKV is replaced by a supersonic flight vehicle, it will be a conventional attack system with the fastest speed in the world….

3. New kinetic anti-satellite and anti-missile system

The report gives quite some details but all of them come from foreign media, experts and intelligence. No one knows whether they are reliable.

4. Anti-warship guided missile

DF-21A

The sources of information are also foreign. Russian media says that it is the first time a real aircraft killer missile has been developed

5. Chang’e III will land on the moon.

6. More space docking will be conducted by Shenzhou X

7. A third prototype of J-20 with much improvement

8. China-made unmanned stealth attack aircraft

9. Test flight of China’s 10-ton helicopter that will perhaps be named Z-20

10. New modular rocket guns will be commissioned in Chinese army for accurate shelling

11. Tremendous progress in China’s nuclear submarine technology with the launching or commissioning of 093B and 095 new-type nuclear submarines

12. Maiden flight of China’s Y-20 large transport aircraft

I am not very informed regarding the authenticity of this website, but so far these "projections" don't look too far off at all.

That site is a purveyor of some quite outlandish rumours, with some that we know are legit.

Isn't that the site which put up an article saying 055 will feature up to 1024 missiles or something?

1 Is not likely, the 52D has not gone to trial yet. Though I believe something like that is in work though. 52D is obviously new armament in old hull design type of Ship. Sooner or later, the new armaments will get a more suitable hull with less compromises.

2. That rumor has been around for years. I doubt it'll happen, DF-21 still has plenty of life in it for the 2,500-3,500 km range and a DF-4 replacement at 4,500-5,000 km is just not useful for China anymore. No need for extra targeting of Russian cities outside of DF-31, and unlike DF-31, it can't target the US. Such a missile would just waste warheads that can go on other more useful platforms.

3. Doubt it. If China is sink money into such enterprise, she's making a big mistake.

4. If it's a C-80X successor then it's a no brainier, I bet it'll fit nicely in the new VLS too. Though the Chinese source seems to talk about DF-21D hitting ship at sea test. I doubt it'll happen, unless the situation is so bad that China feel they need to make such obvious demonstrations.

5. and 6. It's planned already, no mystery about it. But I'm more interested in what Chang'e II will do next. Even after the

, it still has a little delta-V left. The CNSA folk has already stretched this mission far more than designed. CE 2's extra mission really demonstrate CNSA's creativity, resourcefulness and competence more than any Moon landings or Shenzhou dockings. Who would have thought a solar panel deployment monitoring camera can be used in such great effect, and the sort of creative modification in software (while the spacecraft is perform orbit maneuver to get to the asteroid) that can make it happen

7. A normal part of development process

8. Possible, as revealed from the same University competition that leaked J-31

9. Would like to see such helo get a belly mounted radar like SH-60B. That would give a much need boost to ASW capability of PLAN.

10. ?? No idea

11. who knows, may it'll get a pump jet too.

12. already happened.

-----------

I would like to add the following, they might not all happen in 2013. But who knows.

13. The carrier AWACS finally revealed to the public, and may be even see it test on the Liaoning by the end of the year

14. J-10B serial production (about time already)

15. More activities of frontline sub and large naval drills. (The new administration appears to be emphasizing readiness as seen in the massive air force drills last year. The navy, particularly the submarine force maybe getting the same treatment.) Landing exercise with all three LPDs, Y-8Q / 054 drill against Yuan subs and perhaps even full CVGB drills with Liaoning doing multiple sorties.

16. AFT11 start roll out to field forces, giving Chinese infantry a much needed punch against armor.

17. Y-20 tanker variant prototype will appear. (I feel the plane is developed in parallel with Y-20 transport variant) PLAAF needs tankers even more than it needs transport. H-6 tankers are useful training platforms, that's about yet. Y-20 tankers however will actually get PLAAF to places.

18. All artillery troop will have hearing protection. (may be this is the year..)

19. More 056 variants will appear, perhaps an ASW variant with helo hanger, TAS and ASROC. I always feel the 056 is a modular system with many possible variants. Most of the 037s that 056 supposed to replace are sub chasers, and ASW is a well known PLAN weakness.

20. We finally confirm Quad-packed Naval SD-10s on the new VLS once 052D gets commissioned. (Hopefully the new openness of the air force extends to the navy)

21. New 054B rolls out with new common VLS system and other improvements. (Prairie-Masker?)

22. Full range test of DF-31A / DF-41 (I actually see no difference between the two) into the south pacific and actual missile launch test of 094. Both would send strong messages, and would actually test the full capabilities of the missile which was done for DF-5 development but not for the new solid fueled ICBMs.

All these rumors, and nothing about lasers? :( .
Well, one thing we'd better see, if the Liaoning is going to be an effective carrier, is serial production of the J-15 and the training and make up of an airwing for the carrier, That has not happened yet and I expect to see a lot of progress in 2013 on that front.

For the PLAN, that is perhaps as important an occurance as anything else.

I don't think 2013 will be as exciting as 2012 in terms of new stuff coming out, in particular 055 and 001A won't become recognizable until 2014. We will see a continuing production run of the existing ship and plane models. The only thing I'm looking forward to is that new toy SAC is playing with, also I'm hoping to see if we can get a blurry picture of H10 knowing H20 will not appear until much later.

In 2013, I hope that the J-10B serial production commences. Powered by WS-10 Taihang engines, with AESA radars and hopefully with retractable refueling probes.

Despite the glitz and glamour of the J-20s and J-31s, my attention is focused on J-10B. It is the only modern, Chinese combat-jet, which seen service with initial design and then evolved (to modern air-combat requirements) into a more potent fighter. Kinda like the F-16s.

So yes, I sincerely hope, that 2013 be a year for China to consolidate on its tremendous achievements. A year which will see the WS-10 Taihangs (go into serial production) power the J-10Bs. The engine sector is an area which China will prevail over and conquer this year. May this year also bring good news about progress or completion of tests to the WS-20 engines (which I understand to be the power plant for the J-20s, correct me if i'm wrong).

The sooner the J-10Bs get into serial production with AESA radars and more powerful and more efficient than AL-31, Taihang WS-10s. The sooner the Chinese fighter pilots will start training and performing air-combat exercises.

Hopefully, this year would usher in a series of new, more enhanced and more detailed air-combat/red-flag style exercises between Pakistan Air Force and People's Liberation Army Air Force. I personally believe that PLAAF and PAF so much to learn from each other, share with each other and formulate new tactics together. And training and fighting with PAF, the PLAAF will get a great insight into how western fighters behave.

Isn't too early for a blurry picture of H10? and what is H-20?
