why has missile and drone interception been a thing in the ukraine for so long despite the economics being lopsided as anywhere else and russia being able to overload them as with that one time with a few hundred gerans in kyiv? just more arcane political calculations on the russian side?
Bigger variety of interception methods from the Russian side that run the gamut of costs. They never stopped investing in things like mobile, self-contained SHORADS like the Pantsir or Tor nor they never got fully rid of tubed AA.

The west became so reliant on air power that SHORAD fell to the wayside until recently, relying mostly on the nth Stinger variant(or other MANPAD derivatives) which isn't particularly good anymore or expensive repurposed AA missiles that makes mass fielding of them financially difficult and hard to replace once spent.

Three Ukrainian army strongholds were struck by FAB-3000 bombs. Footage of strikes by Russian FAB-3000 aerial bombs near the villages of Kostiantynivka and Krasnyi Liman. The attack was carried out by a Russian Su-34 frontline fighter-bomber. Ukrainian units from the 60th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade and the 100th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade held the buildings in these villages. A FAB-3000 aerial bomb strike on a Ukrainian stronghold near the village of Ivanivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region is also shown. Judging by the widespread use of FAB-3000 bombs, the Russian army already has a surplus of them.

Footage of strikes by the new Russian heavy-duty FPV drone "Upyr-18" on temporary Ukrainian army deployment sites. The exact location of the footage is not disclosed. The Upyr-18 FPV drones, with an increased payload capacity of up to 10 kg, are built on an 18-inch frame. The drones are manufactured by Uraldrone Plant

How a Ukrainian drone operators command post gets detected. It's done by following a Mavic or Baba Yaga drone back to it's home base. A careless operator would pick it up and walk back towards the post. This seems to be followed by a strike of Moliniya FPV drones against the site. Survivors quickly move to the next location unaware they are still being monitored, then followed by a second strike. This sort of activity is performed against each other and every day in a perpetual state of hybrid asymmetrical warfare. This particular strike takes place in Sumy as the Russians expand the buffer zone.

Footage of a Ukrainian armored vehicle carrying paratroopers attempting to break through in the Zaporizhzhia sector. The armored vehicle continued to advance under attack for quite some time, but was eventually destroyed, presumably by drones. This video was captured by Russian reconnaissance personnel from the "East" group of forces in Buryatia. The entire paratrooper force is reportedly killed, as shown at the end. The video has been shortened.
