Lieutenant General
It is incredible that the Russians continue to lose their best aircraft to friendly fire... The Russian air defense command is the most airheaded ever seen in a conflict.
While the Russians rightfully deserve all the shit they get for their continued fratricide, I think sometimes people don’t appreciate how difficult their task is.
What has reportedly happened a number of times is that Ukraine would fire advanced NATO decoys like MALD, under real-time coordination of NATO ISR, at Russian aircraft. The MALDs would mimic targets to attract Russian air defences, and then switch off the signal once Russian SAMs are locking on so the SAMs would end up locking on the Russian aircraft and engaging them instead.
This is another one of those ridiculously situations that will not happen anywhere else, because these kinds of attacks are only possible with micromanagement from NATO ISR operating at extreme close range that they would never be able to do if they were fighting the Russians directly.
Theoretically you can do something similar with stealths acting as the forward observer, but then if you got stealths that close, the stealths can do the kill themselves.
