The tragic death of US Army Pvt. Danny Chen

Unfortunatley they were white, at least the guy from Iowa was, and he was Asian. Sad state of affairs.

Yes indeed it is. It can happen to anyone and at any race at any place. I myself grew up with this kind of bullying and insults sometimes from EVERYBODY (of all racial backgrounds), yes even the Asian one. One sometimes has to handle yourself as best as you can. Fight them if you have to, just make sure you win.

My family too forbade me from joining the military even though I wasn't even thinking about it. But the difference with my family is my grandfather was a US Army WWII veteran and my father was stationed in South Korea during the height of the Cold War. They never broached on why but I always suspected it was because of similar treatment.

Re: Chinese Daily Photos, Videos & News!!

Those thugs will spend the rest of their miserable lives in Ft. Leavenworth once the judge hands them their sentences, if they're found guilty of course. Believe me court martial judge and jurors are less merciful than their civilian counter part.

Also to mention "dishonorable discharge" from the force, if that is the correct term to use.

Just saw this thread, and this news now. My most heartfelt condolences goes to the Pvt's family.

I think bullying is prevalent everywhere but getting it in the military must be among the worst. I wonder if the perpetrators in these situations feel any remorse at all over their actions, that seemingly inconsequential to them could lead someone to take their own life like this. Terrible.

I joined the Army Reserve during the mid 1990s through ROTC and enjoyed it a lot. Yes, there are a few incidents and bad apples here and there, but it's not as widespread as one would think. I have been to units that are mostly whites (I'm talking just one black dude and myself Asian) and we get along very well, and then there were a few idiots in some other units that seems to be lost in their caves and time. The US Military IMO is still a great place to meet many different people around the country and the world, other than the universities. Yes folks from the West coast, East Coast, Southern and Mid-Western all think differently and behave and viewed the world differently.

It still is. Don't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch.

Over 20 years ago "60 Minutes" CBS TV did a segment on how Well US forces get along with each other despite the tremendous diversity. I know in the US Navy this holds true .

Back on topic.. I hope the perpetrators of the hazing of PVT Chen get their just reward. That being time in prison.

After letting the murderer of 24 Iraqis walk free, can't say I'm surprised to see they let another killer marine go.
I was surprised however to learn this is actually another victim Harry Lew, who I haven't heard of before this, not Danny Chen.
Looks like the US military is becoming an increasingly dangerous place for minorities.

"A military jury on Thursday found a Marine sergeant not guilty after authorities charged him with hazing a lance corporal who later committed suicide in Afghanistan.

The general court-martial panel of three officers and five enlisted Marines deliberated about an hour before announcing that Sergeant Benjamin Johns was not guilty of violating a lawful order by wrongfully humiliating and demeaning Lance Corporal Harry Lew.............................................................."

Apparently it's a suicide case, not a murder one, that's why the charges for even man slaughter would be hard to prove since Sgt. Benjamin John didn't personally did it. It's sad for Lance Corp. Lew to face such hazing in his unit. Again, it's up to the officers and NCOs to show professional in their work or else the environment can get out of control.
