The Q-5, J-7, J-8 and older PLAAF aircraft

The J-8 is an interceptor style aircraft built for a different era. Had the "Peace Pearl" program delivered earlier, it might have made the J-8II somewhat comparable to the Su-15. The PLAAF tried to fit the J-8 into various roles that it may not have been best suited for, due to lack of technology and alternatives. However, today that is no longer the case.

I disagree. Although the J-8 II is in no ways comparable to 4th Gen aircraft like the F-16 people don't give them, especially the later variants, enough credit regarding their maneuverability. The J-8 II has superior sustained turn specs than the J-7E and has higher sustained turn performance than early Mirage-2000 variants at high-mid altitudes. I think the J-8 II is more comparable to fighter interceptors like the F-4 and Mig-23 than dedicated interceptors like the Su-15 or Mig-25.

Its called Type 222 radar range finder a copy of СРД-5МК range finder on the original Mig21-F-13.
Equiped vanilla version of J-7I and J-7II.

Just a silly question again regarding the radar of the J-8 !

I know that the improved J-8I was equipped with the SR-4 (Type 204) radar but what was the original fit to the original J-8 (sans suffix) when it entered service ??? ... the same range-finder like the J-7-series ????

The original J8, which is called J8 daytime variant, is equipped with the Type 226 radar range finder, which can also be found on J7II.

Are sure that it was not the Type 222 ... since the Type 226 was only introduced with the J-7E in the 1980s !

I'm pretty certain that J7E uses what was known as Type 226A, an improved version of the original 226 used on J8 and J7II, it uses a flat antenna instead of 226's dish.

Hmmm ... following my information, the Type 226 “Skyranger” radar was acquired for the first time for the J-7IIB (contract signed on 30 June 1980 ... but later cancelled) ... but anyway two aircraft were complete by the third quarter of 1982. Finally on 7 September 1982 test pilot Yu Mingwen performed the maiden flight.

Therefore the J-7II / J-7B still had a Type 222 range finder, which was to be replaced in the modernised version J-7IIA by the Type 226.

You must be thinking about the Marconi 226, all the Chinese sources I've read regarding the 226 indicate that it is a domestic range finder developed specifically for the J8 in the 1970s.

Hmmm ... Actually that's the first time I've hear of of a Type 226 for the J-8 (but to admit I've never heard of any specific designation of the J-8's rangefinder) ... but then this would mean that there are two Type 226 rangefinders ???
