Re: ¦^??: Re: The PLAN LCAC Landing Craft Air Cushion

There are reports and rumors to that effect...but we haven't seen any yet that I am aware of. There's supposed to be, what? Six of them? Been talked about for several years.

I believe the Ruussians have been having trouble building them, and maintaining their own as well.

They are far too big to be embarked on the LPD, or an LHA. They are stand alone, cross the straits on their own kind of craft with a different role than these LCAC which fit into the LPDs. I believe these craft offer much more flexability, more cheaply, and more easily maintained.

Yet, the C-LCAC + 071 LPD package offers longer operational range than the standalone Zubr, and allow the amphibious fleet to conduct combined air + sea assault with such an offshore platform, not to mention giving men and equipment in better form before the assault - afterall, LCAC is still a bumpy ride compare with conventional ship types.

My meaning was that the LCAC offered the flexability and advantages I mentioned over the Zubr for precisely the reasons you mentioned.

They don't build it in Russia but in Ukraine. The Russian own the design but built in Ukraine . The lead Zubir LCAC is not going to see the daylight anytime soon because they were mangled by accident in Ukraine shipyard. The sale include technology transfer So if the Ukraine cannot keep the schedule the chinese might as well built it themselves
I know that the Russians had trouble also filling the order for Zubrs for the Greeks. They ordered four and there was trouble getting the order filled...took over five years if I remember. One of the four was a refurbished Russian vessel, one was built in the Ukraine, and two were built in Russia.

I thought they still could build them in Russia.

Anyhow, my point is that the Chinese may well have to build them themselves because they have been talking about it for over five years and the Chinese have seen nothing yet, except a now damaged vessel in the Ukraine it seems.

If you only need to launch an attack from shore to shore, then Zubr has no disadvantage compared with LCAC. In fact, it maybe better since the weight is 3 times that of LCAC which may help in bad sea conditions.

Zubr has a range of ~500 km. Launched from the coast of mainland China, it can reach the west coast of South Korea, the middle of Vietnam, and of course anywhere in Taiwan. Having a fleet of Zubrs can be quite handy for PLA.

speaking about zubr, it seems that russia is not happy that ukraine is violating russia´s ownership of the zubr design/technology by seeling the design to china

Do you think that russia will press ukraine to not carry the agreement?

It is too late for anyone who tries to stop the deal. Very likely PRC has already obtained the technology.

Russia's weapon exporter should already know this, and very likely is just trying to get some money.

2011-08-10 (China Military News cited from PLA Daily ) -- The new-generation home-made frontier patrol boat of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) that newly entered service launched out for the first time on August 1, the Army Day, and officially began the task of patrolling Argun River, the border river between China and Russia.
According to introduction, this home-made new-type amphibious frontier defense hovercraft is specially designed for frontier defense boat troop units to patrol border rivers. The hovercraft is equipped with advanced navigation radar, GPS, video surveillance, digital communication, and cabin alarm, and features high degree of informationization, broad cabin, strong power, high speed, shallow draft and all-weather patrol. The boat can travel in complex channels such as shallows, swamp and grassland.

New PLA Hovercraft
The new patrol boat entered service at the same time with the frontier defense hovercraft. At a boat dock of frontier patrol boat unit of the Inner Mongolia Military Command of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, the reporters saw the new boat which is of more length and wider beam than the last generation. Since the boat now has two engines rather than one in the past, the speed is higher too.

It is learned that this is the third time for the patrol boat group to change boat equipment since its founding.

with actual financial crisis it would seem feasible for China to acquire Greece's zubr's or at least intel about their construction etc.
