That was...painful to watch. Those guys would not stand any sort of a chance if faced with even moderately trained and competant foes.
All I can say is if that lot was representative of Mali's army, it was little wonder the Islamists nearly took over the country, and if the French expect that lot to be able to hold Mali after they leave, they are the bigger optimists than GWB when he decleared victory in the Iraq war less than a couple months after he ordered the invasion.
If I were the French, I would instigate some major reforms and training programmes for the Mali military right away and make sure their troops are actually trained to shoot properly instead of spraying and praying like a bunch of juvies who never fired a gun before, and their commanders know what the chain of command and basic tactics like flanking are.

Wow...I'm sure their ears are ringing after the fire fight. I noticed that they say a lot of the dead Islamist are foreign troops from other parts of Africa, instead of Malians. Thanks for posting the video and warned us about it too.

The key issue in this is national security. The islamist groups intend a take over of the nation of Mali. It was going to be a fight if the west jumped or not.
They need to adopt counter strike as training software for the Mali soldiers and a mandatory 100hr training time before holding a real gun and facing insurgents.
If nothing else is learned at least they would aim first before shooting.
Also I had a little suspicion that the "Major" wounded in the video may have been friendly fire.

Well only the first half after that everyone just kind got tired of it and stared at each other, But the four centuries before that were all about European on European war.
