Explosions heard in Jammu city amid blackout, Indian Army spokesperson says

From CNN’s Esha Mitra and Caitlin Danaher

Explosions were heard in Jammu city, in Indian-administered Kashmir, an Indian Army spokesperson told CNN.

“We don’t have any more details. At this point, we are trying to ascertain the situation. A blackout is in place,” the spokesperson said.

“Loud explosions—bombing, shelling, or missile strikes suspected,” Shesh Paul Vaid, former director general of Jammu and Kashmir police, said in a post on X, and he added there is currently a blackout.

BBC Verify locates footage of crashed fighter jets published at 09:01

Officials in Islamabad have claimed that Pakistani forces shot down five Indian fighter jets on Wednesday morning. India has so far declined to comment.

But BBC Verify has authenticated three videos which purport to show the wreckage of a French-manufactured Rafale fighter - which are used by the Indian Air Force.

In one clip - geolocated by BBC Verify to a field near the city of Bathinda in India's Punjab state - troops can be seen collecting debris from the crashed jet.

We have also located two further clips from the same location filmed at night. One shows debris in the field, while another shows a projectile catching fire in the sky, and then fire in an open field.

Justin Crump, a former British Army Officer who runs the risk intelligence company Sibylline, told BBC Verify the wreckage appears to be a French air-to-air missile of a type used on both Mirage 2000 and Rafale fighter jets.

Another image circulating on social media shows a tail fin with “BS001” and “Rafale” inscribed on it. Google reverse image searches don’t show any old versions of the image.

Something BIG got hit in Pathankot. Battery of AD is most likely destroyed, or ammo depot hit.
Huge hit in Rajahstan, AD or depot got hit. I suspect Pakistan is destroying air defences along the border, as Paki aircraft are not blessed with good SEAD. Could be a plan to achieve air superiority as we can see Indian Air force is dysfunctional and only India-Isreali air defences can protect their ground forces. If India doesn't start moving its air defences around, it is going to be a slaughter for Indian ground forces.

Jammu, Pathankot, Samba, Akhnoor are still being hit by drones. I suspect, only in places where BARAK 8 is placed, there are interceptions. Smallish drones (slightly bigger than lancet) cannot be intercepted by any Indian systems other than BARAK 8. (Due to Israel having to deal with these types of drones). (Jai hinds are losing their mind and are saying they are intercepting 99% of it, keep in mind when an AD system intercepts something it isn't a HUGE explosion.)

One U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was high confidence that Pakistan had used the Chinese-made J-10 aircraft to launch air-to-air missiles against Indian fighter jets - bringing down at least two.

Another official said at least one Indian jet that was shot down was a French-made Rafale fighter aircraft.
