China’s navy held live-fire exercises near Taiwan on Wednesday in a warning to the democratic, self-ruled island against what Beijing describes as “dangerous” remarks on independence.

have been released by the Chinese government. State broadcaster China Central Television reported that the exercises targeted advocates of formal independence for Taiwan, saying in a headline on its website: “Don’t say you haven’t been warned!”

Taiwan’s Defense Ministry spokesman, Chen Chung-chi, sought to downplay the drill, saying China was exaggerating the scale of the activity to create anxiety among Taiwanese. “It is the Chinese Communist Party that has played this up with cheap verbal intimidation and saber rattling through the state media, hoping to create panic and unease,” Chen said.

Chen described the drill as “a regular artillery shooting exercise” and said China was hyping it up to sound like “a so-called military exercise in the Taiwan Strait.”

China’s Defense Ministry did not immediately respond to questions. The maritime safety authority in the coastal province of Fujian announced the one-day drill last week, saying only that it would start at 8 a.m. and end at midnight.

Last week’s announcement of the drill coincided with President Xi Jinping’s attendance at what was the largest fleet review since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. It comprised 48 ships, among them China’s sole operating aircraft carrier, along with 76 helicopters, fighter jets and bombers, and more than 10,000 personnel.

The fleet review last Thursday was held in the South China Sea, off the coast of Hainan province.

. China says the Taiwan Travel Act violates U.S. commitments not to restore formal exchanges severed when Washington switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.

An agreement to provide Taiwan with submarine manufacturing technology and the appointment of hawkish national security adviser John Bolton have also hardened views among anti-American nationalists in China.

China claims Taiwan as its own territory and says the sides, which separated during the Chinese civil war in 1949, must eventually be united, by force if necessary. Despite a lack of formal ties, Washington is legally bound to respond to threats to Taiwan and is the island’s main supplier of foreign military hardware.

Beijing has also repeatedly criticized Taiwanese officials and has lately singled out Premier William Lai after he told the Taiwanese parliament that he’s a “Taiwanese independence worker” and that Taiwan is a sovereign, independent nation.

Asked about Lai’s comments, Liu Jieyi, director of China’s Taiwan Affairs Office, said Monday, according to the Global Times newspaper: “He’s precisely a Taiwanese independence advocate!”

Liu was also quoted as saying that China “has enough confidence and ability to stop any remarks and actions that attempt to separate any territory from the motherland.”

A spokesman for the same office said earlier this month that Lai’s comments on independence are “dangerous and presumptuous.”

China will do its utmost to pursue the peaceful reunification and will never allow "Taiwan independence" forces to separate Taiwan from China, said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, on Wednesday at a press conference.

Ma said that "Taiwan independence" separatist activities are the greatest threat to the peace and stability of cross-strait relations, and they are damaging the fundamental interests of the people from Taiwan.

This series of actions taken by China are aimed at the “Taiwan independence” forces and their activities, and are to prevent Taiwan people from being harmed by the “Taiwan independence” plot, said Ma.

"Taiwan will simulate taking on an invading force in war games next week amid its increasing tensions with China.

The annual Han Kuang drills, which start on April 30, make no mention of China, only “offensive forces invading Taiwan” and will include a live-fire field training exercise and “enemy elimination on beaches.”

Wait your reading that Now?
first on the technical side:

when I say "now I read" I mean the past tense; I guess it would've been more accurate to say "I have now finished reading", but it's not the English Grammar Forum here LOL

I think those who regularly visit contentious threads like

Trade War with China
or
Chinese Economics Thread

noticed I often reposted Xinhua articles while saying just that ("now I read"), and I think they have understood I express no opinion whatsoever about the content of said articles

now, TE
not the million times before when Beijing has made more or less the same statement? That's like the news reporting that Water is Ice.

I read many types of stuff, and it's interesting for me to look at 'narratives' and how they change/stay the same

and no, I don't think I can be affected: reading The Watchtower wouldn't make me a Jehovah's Witness, would it?

(LOL! in fact I used to prefer Awake! as far as I recall)

Taiwan Wants American M1 Abrams Tanks. And the Reason Is China...

abramstankfiringitsmainguninthedesert_copy.jpg

"Taiwan is once again interested in purchasing Abrams tanks from the United States.

This week the Hong Kong–based South China Morning Post reported that Taiwan’s Minister of National Defense, Yen Teh-fa, told a legislative panel that Taipei is still interested in purchasing U.S.-made M1A2 Abrams tanks. Citing Taiwan’s United Daily News, South China Morning Post said that Taiwan’s Defense Ministry is initially interested in buying two battalions (or 108) of M1A2 tanks. Ultimately, the Taiwanese military hopes to purchase even more tanks from Washington."

China would be secretly delighted if Taiwan wastes its defence budget on Abrams.

Taiwan’s topography is similar to southern China, which is ill-suited to superheavy MBTs like the Abrams, meaning those tanks will be largely restricted to the road network and will risk getting bogged down if they try to manoeuvre cross country in a lot of places.

But more importantly, MBTs are only useful after PLA forces land. At which point it’s pretty much already game over, with it only a matter of when not if the PLA takes the whole island.

With Taiwan’s close proximity and lack of strategic depth, those Abrams would also be sitting ducks to PLA drones and CAS, with most of them almost certain to be taken out by air strikes long before they have anything to shoot at.

The PLA would be more concerned if Taiwan took their Abrams money and bought MANPADs and ATGMs instead.

I thought last year they elected to upgrade there Pattons... I do kinda agree with Wolf, a bit.
The Abrams is a 3rd Generation MBT And being blunt Weighty It's not that it can't move around Taiwan it's just over kill. In the Island scenario, It's fire and maneuver over ability to take a pounding, A medium tank, or a 4th Gen tank I think would be the better option. Something that is better suited to Roads, Yet able to off road, but packs a full power 120mm main gun. That could also be used as the Hull for a SHORAD system.
