Missing pilot did not defect, Taiwan defence chief says
There have been rumours that the pilot of a Dassault Mirage 2000 jet who went missing on Tuesday may have defected to China; that was strongly denied

The search for a Taiwan Air Force Dassault Mirage 2000 jet fighter is still going on after it went missing above the sea off Hsinchu city in northeastern Taiwan on Tuesday evening.

Taiwan’s Defence Minister Feng Shih-kuan was upset by a Radio Free Asia (RFA) reporter who asked if the missing pilot on the jet actually defected to China.

“Why do we have to conduct night trainings and patrols? Because we must let the mainland know that we are capable of defending the nation at night, and for the peace of mind of Taiwan people… But some still suggest that our missing pilot can be a traitor,” said Feng during a Legislative Yuan inquiry on Thursday.

Feng, obviously incensed, threatened that his ministry would no longer allow any RFA reporter to attend future press conferences.

Meanwhile, a deputy chief commander of the island’s air force also dismissed any possibility of treason.

“The jet fighter concerned was not flying alone, rather, it was in a formation and thus the pilot simply could not fly the jet to the mainland,” Taiwan’s Central News Agency quoted him as saying.

“Nor there was any Chinese or other foreign warplanes or vessels in the vicinity of the last known location of the fighter.”

An investigation panel was set up shortly after the Taiwan army scrambled jets and ships to rescue the missing pilot on Tuesday evening.

Feng also ruled out the need to seek help from Japan or the United States, but some have even suggested that Taipei should contact the People’s Liberation Army to conduct a joint search operation.

Feng also said that no signal had been received so far from the pilot – but even if he was able to eject from the plane, his parachute did not have the capacity to relay his location as there was no GPS device in the escape suit.

The Taiwan Air Force currently maintains a fleet of 60 French-made, multi-role single-engine fighters. The planes were procured in 1997 to form the backbone of the island’s air defence at a time when cross-strait relations were strained.

Prior to Tuesday’s incident, there have been five accidents involving Dassault Mirage 2000 fighters since they entered service, with four pilots killed.

In May 2013, a two-seat multi-role version of the fighter crashed into the sea but the two pilots managed to eject. All such fighters were grounded for emergency checks in the wake of that accident.

The fighters are also expensive to fly – NT$800,000 (US$26,500) per hour compared to NT$160,000 for F-16s, according to the Taipei-based China Times.

Taiwan military commentators have said that having been in service for 20 years, these fighters are in a dire need of a D-check, or “heavy maintenance visit”. But that has been delayed for several years after the French supplier, Dassault Aviation, quoted whopping prices in 2012, allegedly because it was under the pressure from Beijing to do that.

lol, this fantastic era, that many of you are still living now, ended up some 25 years ago with commercial flights between Taipei and Bejing and vice versa.

Exactly. If the pilot wants to defect, all he needs to do is to buy a plane ticket and fly over to the mainland. There are currently hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese working and studying in the mainland. The pilot can easily move to the mainland with his newly wed wife legally.

If he wants, he can even choose to join the communist party, as some Taiwanese have done. Their only punishment from the Taiwanese government seems to be cancelation of their residency on the island. They are still free to go back and visit their families if they want.

Flying the old Mirage 2000 to the mainland is useless. Because of the intense effort by the mainland, the Taiwanese AF cannot even buy spare parts for their planes. So all of their Mirage 2000's are ill-maintained. The plane itself is 70's technology and is of no use and no interest to the PLAAF. If someone flies a Mirage 2000 to the mainland, the Chinese most likely will just haul the plane directly to a museum. I don't even think they would let their pilots fly it. Too much risk to fly an ill-maintained plane...

besides all that it's been 3 days since the incident now. IF there had been a Defection by now Xi would call all the Press and had Propaganda Blitz. There would be Cake, Streamers those stupid things people blow in that extend and make that funny noise.... Okay maybe not that much.

I'm just confused how the plane went missing when it was flying in formation?

Getting residency as a civilian won’t be the same as arriving with a 40million jet fighter. You would pretty much be set for life in the latter case, whereas you will just be one of a billion in the case of the former.

Although there is zero evidence to support the notion of a defection in this case. With the length of time that has elapsed especially all but ruling a defection out.

Taiwan to China defection doesn't make any sense.... I'm sure if he applied, he could've gotten a chinese PR
Perhaps the pilot wanted to defect in style thereby to pissed off his commanders by defecting with an expensive government funded military equipment. Kind of like what Captain Ramius did to his Typhoon Class Soviet nuclear submarine in the novel "Hunt for Red October.";)

OMG! I can't believe my posting of that article can cause such a long discussion about defection. I don't think he defected. Or was trying to defect. Most likely is that his plane malfunctioned and he crashed into the sea.

The more interesting aspect of this for me is the military significance of this. Since Taiwan has no means at the moment to replace lost planes this means attricion for the Taiwanese air force. By my calculation Taiwan should have (with this crash) 324 fourth generation fighters (143 F-16, 54 Mirage 2000 and 127 AIDC Ching-kou's).

Taiwan plans to build 66 advanced trainers based on the AIDC Ching-kuo by 2026 and after that Taiwan plans to build the next generation fighter jet. We have to wait and see how well that project will go. By then most Taiwanese air frames will be more than 30 years old and will be ripe for replacement.
