My understanding was that Indonesia got these corvettes for a very, very reasonable price.

They may not have a hanger, but when patrolling in concert with the newer Sigma 10514 frigates which do (once they are in service), or with the older Ahmad Yani class frigates which also have hangers, they would make a very powerful combination.

Are they the ones from ex East German navy? I understand they are 30 of them

No, these three vessels were built by BAE Systems Scotstoun, Glasgow, specifically for the Royal Brunei Navy in 2001 and 2002.

Then Brunei refused to take them and it went to arbitration, and Brunei lost the legal fight in 2007. Brunei then contracted the German Lürssen ship yard to find a new customer for the three ships. Finally, in November 2012, it was announced that Indonesia had signed a memorandum of understanding with Britain to acquire the vessels for one-fifth of the original unit cost...a heck of a deal for vessels that have never been used, but have been well maintained.

Re: ASEAN military news

2014 and beyond will see continued stepping up of military/naval spending by several ASEAN countries that have sea borders/territorial waters to defend. Never underestimate their combined strength if they are somehow forced to form an alliance similar to SEATO of the past. It is unfortunate that events since the year 2000, the start of the 21st Century in South-East Asia have triggered the "arms race", when money could be better spent in improving infrastructures and helping the poor and destitute in the respective countries. Can lessons of dismal past hostilities and WW II jolt political leaders in Asia, to their senses? The answer at this present time is quite "blur".

Lot of volatile factors make this region a fertile ground for future hostilities with the bigger dogs in the neighborhood.. ASEAN would be well poised to remain united against any adversarial situation if they are to gain traction in world peking order :nono:.
