ALMATY (Kazakhstan)/SHANGHAI, June 16 (APP): President Pervez Musharraf on Friday hoped successful accomplishment of the deal, under which China has to provide four frigates to Pakistan by the year 2013, with transfer of technology.

During his visit to Hudong shipyard where the construction of frigates will take place, he said the F- 2P frigate project will prove an outstanding symbol of ever-green Sino-Pak friendship.

The President who was here to attend the SCO's summit availed the opportunity to visit the shipyard, reviewing the existing cooperation between navies of the two countries.

He was given comprehensive briefing about different construction phases of the Frigates. The President was told that first frigate would be ready for delivery to Pakistan within next three years.

Three frigates, to be equipped with latest helicopter and missile system, will be built at the Chinese Hudong Shipping country, while four at the Karachi shipyard.

In his brief remarks about the project, President Musharraf further said that it would enrich Pakistan's experience to build most modern war-ships in the country. He said he was fully satisfied with the progress of the project.

The President was further informed that the design of the frigates was being prepared in accordance with specific Pakistan’s requirements. This is the first major collaboration between the two navies.

The frigates would be up to the level of highly advanced international standard, said President of the Shipyard Zhou Jian Neng while introducing the main features of the project.

Earlier, Chinese Minister Commission for Science, Industry and Defence Zhang Yunchuan met the President and discussed with him matters of bilateral cooperation. The progress on the on-going projects in the field of science and technology was discussed at the meeting.

Any info on what "latest helicopters and missiles" means? Are we talking SA-10? Also, what frigates are currently built at Hudong shipyard?

Well that issue was discussed quite a lot in thread about F22p frigate. if we look at price tag for that frigates and dimensions of F22p there is quite obvious that SA-10 is not an option... Latest missiles are probably type802a SSM... SAM is HQ-7 and “latest helicopter” is probably Z-9c...

The HQ-7 is only useful for point defense, how exactly does pakistan intend to provide air-defense for it's navy ?

There dosn't seem to be any long range SAM's in pakistan's inventory and against a carrier these ships are going to be sitting ducks

I am inclined to suspect that it won't really be SA-10 because if it was there'd already be a bigger fuss about it. At any rate Russia probably places export restrictions on SA-10 dervived technology in the same way China can't just export the J-11 (Su-27/30 Flanker family made in China).

you get what you paid for. If you want something at the level of Talwar, you got to pay twice that kind of money. Even China's on FFGs don't have anything outside of HQ-7. C-802 is going to have 200 KM range in lo-lo profile in a few years, what else do you want? The sensors on F-22P certainly can't detect that far.

I thought the C-802 was a land attack cruise missile and not for air-defense ?

If the PN policy is surface vessels for defense and submarines for attack, what
protects naval vessels from air attack ?

I was thinking of naval air defense missiles like the SM-2

Pakistan's navy has no meaningful area-air defense vessels and no apparent plans to get any.

Exactly my point.

Pakistan is alleged to have bought the FT-2000 in 2003 however if it has where are they ?

I had thought the next pakistani naval purchase would be a decent naval
air defense destroyer.

However long range SAM's are being totally ignored both on sea and land

C-802A is AShM, not LACM.

What are you hoping for exactly in the navy? Something in the shtil range or S-300 range? You need to be a little realistic here. It took generous loans from China to even make this deal happen. PN has no hope of matching up in surface combatants against IN. You have to realize that. The Pakistani military obviously has realized that already.
