Golly,

Personly I don't support civillian to own guns. I remember when a serious school shooting happened in Virginia University last time, some media blame guns companies, then the companies disprove that it's not the guns but the men who commit crime. My question is that: without guns, can that guy killed 33 persons? Weapon is never a toy, they are meant to killing.

Well My stance is that the weapons that I have are only tools for sports. And by ergonomics and purposefullnes stake, they harly fit for any other use. I also think that any sort of other weapons shouldnt be posessed by civilians as there isent IMO any other moral usage of them outside the sports that are been shot at the olympics.

I have found an article about a Russian serial killer, who kills about 50 people with a hammer. If it true, Russians should band the hammers?

Well, well, carm down, my friend. When I click reply I haven't read the article yet. But I'd tell you that the Khmer Rouge killed more than a million with hoes. I don't have any link to support this statement, but you can check some historical books about Cambodia and The Khmer Rouge Regime for that. Hammers or hoes are meant for other usage while guns is made for killing.

Please note that the case you mentioned above is different from the case at Virginia U. The guy killed 33 people in a very short time, how long did it take that Russian killer to kill 50 people?

Generally, I quite agree with Golly that civillian should only possess sport-type guns. I also like guns and go to shooting range once a while too.

The incident was unfortunate, and I wish the mass media wouldn't make such a big fuzz over it for all the other crazy copy cat killers.

Private gun ownership is a very controversial issue. In many countries where private ownership is permitted, you could buy guns and ammo at age 18. Here in California, the minimum age to purchase "long" guns (rifles, shotguns) and ammo is 18, and for pistols is 21. Only in recent decades did they implement restrictions like waiting period and tougher background checks.

In Argentina they had a mentally ill person who went on a rampage and shot people at random on the street. By law he wasn't a convicted criminal, so even if you did a background check with the police, it'd have been legal for him to purchase the gun and ammo. And if we were to restrict "mentally ill" from buying weapons, then we'd have to decide what type of mental illness, to what degree, what type of restrictions (cars are just as dangerous when used to run people over), and sharing of patient's medical data with the police and possibly even the public. Going on a slippery slope here -- do you want to be denied a driver's license just because you saw a doctor? This is not an easy question to answer.

Yeas unfortunetly it did. And one of the saddest part is that this guy copied alot from the previous shooter. He posted similar videos in youtube and othervice followed similar pattern in his act.

In both cases the officials have done quite serious miss-judgements. In the Jokela incidence the permission for the gun was given without the police interviewning the guy (which is standart practice). At this incidence the police found out the videos where this guy shoots with his gun and makes threats and actually bring him down to police station but came into conclusion that he was ok and there were no reason to confiscate the gun!!

IMO if some guy is idiot enough to boast around in internet with his new gun and make threats around it should be quite solid reason to take the gun away from him exspecially when it haven't been so long from the last incidence. Still, I kinda feel sorry for that comisar who did the decision...no easy nights on him...:(

My condolences to the families that lost loved ones.

If what golly posted is true and I have no reason to doubt it....seems to me the police are somewaht at fault.

Sadly there are many twisted minds in the World that love this violence and think it will be cool to leave this life with guns blazing. This is a tradgey..

Well one thing is certain is that these type of killings cannot be prevented by changing the gunlaws. In here it's extremely difficoult to get liason for larger calibre pistols but as we seen even small-bore .22LR calibres are deathly enough.

In both cases the shooter apparently was deeply depressed and anxiated and had self-destructive mind tangled with revenge-type of mentality...spotting that out from you fellow citisen is extremely hard if not impossiple...
