I just realized that J-XDS is probably a medium fighter by sixth gen standards.
Only China and US that have the 6 gen tickets. However, in the battlefields that both sides have envisioned, there is no place for the old light fighter. Thus, medium fighter becomes the starting point, and heavy fighter becomes the new medium.

Uhh... the US is aiming to produce a 6th gen prototype by 2028. Key word there is aiming.

No they haven't flown prototypes unless you call empty shell, scaled down experimentals/ concept demonstrators to be prototypes. If that's the case then China was flying multiple 6th gen prototypes in 2017.

They're just trying to cut down on the process stream by converging testing onto fewer platforms and getting larger iterative steps.

You'll see. When they deliver that in 2028 if they meet their own timeline, the world will not be seeing a production model. At best it'll be a B-21 like deal where they are going to eventually convert that to a usable platform but that 2028 platform is still going to be an informative process, not a LRIP. Essentially it is more or less what the J-36 (36001) and J-50 prototypes are in late 2024.

As usual, the ones with the correct appreciation of facts and reality will be proven correct in time again. Those on the other side have been wrong about pretty much everything from J-10 is fake in the 2000s to USA bigly powerful in 2025. China hasn't just overtaken US long ago, it's on the way to lap it full. Fanboys, copers and laypeople alike don't have the knowledge, awareness or intelligence to understand this but again, this will be unequivocally proven to be the case in enough time. By then, the ground realities would have moved further vs what their perceptions of ground realities are so there's always this delay in perception.
