Which in a way... I think it make sense that China chooses the 601 (J-31) design over the 611. J-31 had a couple (two I think) of prototypes flying already... while the 611 design might still be on drawing board, so in term of speed of development, the J-31 do have some advantages.

Although it can be argued that J-20 is already up there for some time now (although still in prototype stage) but to downsize a J-20, is not going to be easy, and it is going to take some time, also what engine will be used to power the downsized J-20? We know that the Chinese will use WS-15 for J-20, but will the same engine be used for the downsized J-20? Or a new engine needed to be developed, or the Chinese needed to fall back onto the Russian to supply engines? If a new engine was to be developed, then more time is needed.

For J-31, I believe it already had a powerplant - WS-13.

(Personal note: I like the look of J-31 better... look more... beautiful than the J-20, please don't bash me for that;))

Navalized is more of the word than downsized, I think. After all, J-20 isn't any bigger than J-15, why does it have to be downsized?

Where did that information come from?

From a very nationalistic forum of which I'd feel embarrassed to share the link here. Over there, except for the citing of some big shrimps' words, there's really not much else worth your reading. It's like reading the BR type of chest thumping, mocking, etc.

Well... that is the rumour ain't it. A smaller J-20. And also even if there it isn't downsized, the newly navalized J-20 had not been seen yet, not even a sized model.

Actually the rumours were talking just about a navalised J-20, nothing about it being downsized as far as I can tell.

There were rumours of a downsized J-20 before that, but it was not for naval use but for land use I think.

I thought it was just a navalize J-20 too, but when I mentioned size someone told me it was a downsized design. Either way, until a naval J-20 materializes I'm taking this competition rumour with a grain of salt.

Given the aerodynamic characteristic of the J-20, I don't it can take off at lower speed than J-15 even with the help of canards. So, if J-20 style aircraft want to get onto the Liaoning, it needs to be re-desgined. Make it lighter, changing the main wings, lower its taking off speed, more powerful engines, etc...

The aerodynamics of J-20 would actually make the aircraft better for carrier operations than J-15. The same principles that make J-20 so maneuverable would let the J-20 to fly at a lower speed or have better control.

I'll buy that, except I'm afraid theres only 1 prototype?? but it is a looker, and far more practical as a carrier aircraft than any vaporware J-20, looks like the PLAN is sold on Shenyang, they have done a fantastic job on the J-15. brat
