This Altantic article author doesn't have a clue pointing to a CGI as being wrong. Unless that's the point to convey to readers. If you like reading comments, look in here. The most cringeworthy are the guys who talk like they're experts yet what they state is complete ignorance.
Why bother reading such drivel? It's just a waste of time.
It is no mystery really how news organizations keep managing to find such clueless 'experts', it's all a nice little racket. The papers know what their readers want to hear, so they will only pay and print the views of the 'independent experts' who say the right things.
If you are an 'independent expert', the choices are either to say what you truly think and have no-one mainstream pay you any heed, or toe the party line, get paid for your efforts and have the profile of your think tank boosted by being mentioned in mainstream media, which will generate more jobs and income. Bit of a no-brainer really.
At the end of the day, the 'experts' line their pockets, and the news organizations get to promote the message they want while being able to use 'independent experts' to lend their views legitimacy and also having the option of passing the buck to the independents if their stories turn out to be complete hogwash, as is usually the case with reports on China in general and the Chinese military in particular.
