Saudi Arabia to buy Eurofighters

I have done alot of interacting with the saudi military. this is blunt but its the truth.
1. HUGE , MASSIVE anything money can buy they have it. Truly a Massive well built military if you just look at these giant military cities.

2. Nepotism has killed it as a truly professional force.

3. Army and National Guard well equip but on a individual warrior basis they are inmature and have a silver spoon sticking out of every part of the body. They would rather shoot guns than rather learn to read a map first or for that matter any of the unpleasent but crucial warrior skills. Their idea of going into contact with the OPFOR is taking the highway or road. They are scared to death in using a map and travaling over desert ***EVEN WITH GPS***.

4. Airforce is great and well trained but you have to be a prince to fly a plane. They will fight and they will kill you however do to their strange class system the best are often not given the chance to fly.

5.Very bad at upkeeping equip. without outside contractors they would have about 50% servicable equipment.

in closing I cannot tell you just how big the infastructure of the military is. They could field a 1,000,000 man army if they had the people willing to join it. They seem to realy want to be self reliant on protecting their nation but at the same time war seems to be just one big game to them.

Utelore, I totally agree with you. The Saudi military is a joke even with all the weapons they possess. And it isn't coincidental. The Royal Family is terrified of its local populace and they do everything to make sure that they will stay in power. If the military was very well trained and well equipped, they could easily throw the Saudi family out of power if a general decided to. What better way to ensure safety than to make sure the only way to stay in power is to have a weak military and weak population (especially since Uncle Sam is protecting your regime all the way). Their air arm is in somewhat better condition than its land forces, but I am still dissapointed by their performance.

Did the PLAAF need Eurofighters?
They have the J-10, possible to develop a 2-engines variant, and there shouldn't bee a big difference to Eurofighters .... am I right?

In reply to another question on the jets deal with Britain, Prince Sultan said the Kingdom will purchase over 200 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft. “We shall disclose the details by March next,” he added.

Thanks Utelore for that appraisal about the Saudi military.

I did not know that only princes get to fly the best jets, that is pretty awful nepotism.

I've already heard about the Saudi's not being able to service and maintain their own equipment, that's why the west feels so comfortable about giving them weapons in spite of objections from Israel.

But I've also heard that Saudi Arabia actually has two parallel armies (one might be called the 'national guard' but it's not like the guard as Americans know it).

The whole idea is to have each army check the other so as to protect the Saudi royal family from a military coup d'etat.

Here's a couple of comments from an ex-pat worker who used to work with Royal Saudi Air Force:

I had a finnish friend who went to SA to work as network admin for about a year. He hated the place and mentioned the Saudis would rather hire ex-pats to work in IT positions than to train their own, preferring to keep their people ignorant. His comments are prolly an exaggeration.

I've only meet a few people from SA while I was in KL Malaysia. Contary to popular belief that Saudi men are bastards who beat their wives, the ones I meet only wanted to talk about their wife and kids, and asked where to buy gifts for their wives.
