The distance of Su-57D's second cockpit from the ground actually very similar to J-20S' second cockpit since both are located above the landing gear bay. So rather than Su-57D second cockpit is too high it's more that the rest of the plane is lower and flatter than J-20S.

It’s only true because J-20 has higher ground clearance (maybe) than the Su-57. Considering the fact that the latter has belly intakes if you take measurements I think it is as thick, if not thicker than the J-20 at the thickest part. The hump definitely sacrifices drag reduction to a much greater degree than the solution on J-20S, which has far worse frontal visibility.

That’s because the spine would literally snap if they made it any deeper. There were structural issues with the original prototype that were remedied in the production model.
To be fair, depth didn't change, and it is in fact deep.
The point is not having it extend 1m upwards (unless you're fitting in rotary or stack a bomb bay), the point is that useful volume of all 4 bays is a perfectly simple rectangular box without intrusios, after pylons.
This is still unique among operational 5th gen types.
