Russian Su-57 Aircraft Thread (PAK-FA and IAF FGFA)

...The US has GaN based radars used on the F/A-18, F-15EX, EA-18G, and EA-37B along with upcoming AN/APG-85 for the F-35. They also widely deployed GaN on numerous ground based air defence radars.
Out of curiousity, i looked. From what i understand GaN radar for F-15EX is just a proposal atm. It is not clear if the E/A-18G has received the GaN APG-79(V)4 which is fitted to upgraded legacy C/D models, if there is definite confirmation i'll stand corrected but i haven't seen anything clear.

Crazy to think he's just throwing it out there...

Russia doesn't exactly have a lot of options for sourcing a GaN AESA suitable for the Su-57 or essential components thereof, especially in the current sanctions environment.

Both the Russian and Chinese sides are understandably keeping things close to their chests, but the writing has been on the wall for some time now.

This George fellow is probably operating under the assumption that Western intelligence already got a decent, if not detailed grasp of the Su-57's AESA supply chain.

No, you are correct the GaN radar is proposed to slot in future production batches of F-15EX production (as APG-82(V)X). The E/A-18G uses the ALQ-249 jammer which utilizes GaN. The Eagle Passive Active Warning Survivability System (EPAWSS) upgrade for the F-15E and EX also uses GaN. Outside of aircraft, you have the upgraded AN/MPQ-65A for Patriot, it’s replacement the Lower-Tier Air and Missile Defense System (LTAMDS), and the AN/TPS-80 Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar all utilizing GaN technology.

My point was really that these systems are already widely adopted in US (and Chinese) service in many areas, so getting GaN on a future variant of the Su-57 isn’t really a game changing upgrade for the aircraft when looking at what the US and China currently field. Certainly Russia doesn’t have the depth of experience is using any type of AESA radar that the US and China do.

All examples are simpler and less thorough than fighter GaN MESA. Fighters tend to come last, it's the most demanding application on both tech and cost metrics.
Especially on su-57, where you have lots of big arrays.
People need to understand that antenna is only part of the equation. Back end processing of data can be more important than raw power output.
Coding and math aren't exactly Russian weakness though.
Normally Russia aims for doing everything domestically, but it makes sense to be seduced by a path to field key upgrades during war(and among risk of wider war in the west) sooner.

Software, sure. But don’t forget stuff like digital signal processing which requires semicon as well.

Hi,
so if Chinese Radar is fitting out in su57 will it be done in China or back in Russia and under
which team Russia/ China and if it’s in China su57 will be going in IL78 so I request the info
diggers to watch out for IL78 landings in china just for the confirmation.
thank you

Not radar. There's speculation(for now), that gan trms for evolved byelka variant can be temporarily sourced from China, before Russia finishes it's own rnd in their manufacture at sufficient output, quality and price points.

TRMs are commercial product, nothing other than money goes to China in this scheme.
