Ka-52 low pass
That's an amazing low pass, and the slow motion shows it very well.

I have seen numerous of these very low passes by Russian military aircraft. It seems like it is kind of a fad of theirs.

It could be a very dangerous fad.

Imagine all the vehicles and trucks that SU-24 was passing over...just above them as they travelled down that road. You can see them passing underneath.

Here's how the SU-24 low pass looks from the perspective of a passenger car on the highway:

Thanks Jeff! I love those low level flight videos. They are dangerous but probable an aset in a war situation. I will post some for you on the Central and South American thread.

Well, perhaps...but only in very specific cirumstances.

Aircraft live in a 3-d environment, and they need air above and beneath them to be able to manuever...to gain energy and bleed it off.

At such altitudes, they do seem very fast to those standing on the gorund. but they are also very limited. They have given up an entire dimension of manuever space...with no where to go below them. And they are not as fast as they could otherwise be...or as manueverable.

A good doppler radar will find them.

A good set of eyeballs will see them...and then take advantage of their lack of energy and maneuver space.

And, in attacking positions? Well, dropping any ordinance from that altitude will unavoidably result in their own destruction.

So...yes it is cool looking. And it shows a certain set of skills.

But IMHO, unless things have gone completely to hell in a hand basket...it is also not someplace a fighter or attack aircraft wants to be in combat.

You could always use delayed fuse bombs to avoid blowing yourself up..
Not recommended for interceptor types, but can still be used for strike aircraft...

Did I mention it look very cool….. :)

Jeff, generally speaking you are correct but those skills are also honed on some pilots for NOE mission especially in a high threat deep penetration strike profiles.

Yes, I agree.

But even NOE is not like these extremely low pass situations. In NOE you are generally still 100 feet up or so. Maybe some lower...but not 3 feet off the ground.

My point is that there are definitely some use for very low level flight. Any penetration mission to avoid radar as much as possible will involve it staying below the radar horizon. But they are still not as low as these flights.
