Russia to Supply S-400 Air Defense Systems and Frigates to India
BENAULIM, Indian state of Goa --- Russia and India signed several agreements in the military-technical sphere, including for supplies of S-400 Triumph air defense systems, the production of frigates of project 11356 for the Indian Navy, and the creation of an Indian-Russian joint venture to manufacture Ka-226T helicopters.
The agreements were signed in the presence of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The S-400 Triumph is an anti-aircraft long-range weapon passed on to the Russian armed forces in 2007. It can destroy aircraft and cruise missiles at a distance of up to 400 kilometers and ballistic targets flying at a speed of 4.8 kilometers per second at a distance of 60 kilometers.
China was the first foreign country to buy S-400. A contract was signed in the spring of 2015. The media estimated the deal at close to 3 billion dollars.
Russia was building six frigates of project 11356 for its Navy however the construction of the last three was in doubt as they are equipped with Ukrainian-made engines. The United Shipbuilding Corporation said it is negotiating with India the sale of the three warships. India currently has six Russian-built frigates of Talwar type which are predecessors of project 11356 warships designed for export. They were passed on to the Indian Navy in 2003-2004 and 2012-2013.
Russia and India agreed on joint production of Ka-226T helicopter in December 2015 during a visit of the Indian prime minister to Russia. It is planned to produce not less than 200 craft of the type and 140 of them will be built on the territory of India.
Ka-226T is a light multipurpose helicopter with a takeoff weight of 3.4 tons. It is designated to carry up to 1.5 tons of cargo or up to seven passengers at a distance of 600 kilometers
