Russian Navy ships may receive electrical propulsion system of Russian production - said the head of the United shipbuilding Corporation Alexey Rakhmanov

Currently on most warships, the transmission of power from the engine to the propeller shaft is via a gearbox. In the electrical propulsion system, electric power will power the engine and rotate the propellers.

The obvious advantage of such a system for warships is the ability to quickly change the speed of propeller rotation and the ships direction, and consequently resulting in a higher acceleration and maneuverability of the ship. In addition, the implementation of the principle of electrical propulsion allows for freer layout of the ship in the sense of the location of the

The use of electrical propulsion system is being considered as a auxilary system to the main propulsion system in the design of the prospective destroyers

According to Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Yuriy Borisov , production of Tu-160 (newly built planes) will resume, but only after 2023. Those new examples would be heavily modernized and very much different then existing examples, so they would get designation Tu-160M2 . Below is quote and link in Russian

"По планам, скорее всего, после 2023 года. По сути дела, это новый самолет — не Ту-160, а Ту-160М2. С новыми летно-техническими характеристиками, с новыми возможностями. Это только планер будет старый, да и то — оцифрованный, а возможности у него будут совершенно новые", — сказал Борисов, отвечая на вопрос РИА Новости.

So that would coincide with the delivery of the PAK-DA? What's the timetable for that now anyway. Because in my understanding, PAK-DA is still a (sub-sonic) Tu-160 category type airplane. And not a Su-34 follow on. Two major bombers sounds a bit ambitious in the current state. I could see one as a work up for the other. But that would obviously make the PAK-DA time table slip.

As you may know, there are two, let's say, "schools of thought" in Russia regarding stealth in aviation . One basically wants stealth aircraft (PAK FA , PAK DA etc ...) , other accuses former of blindly copying the West and considers stealth as a fad and marketing ploy .

This second school of thought emphasizes speed and maneuverability , they have been in opposition lately but they still created some interesting concepts like Su-47 . In bomber arena, they argue that subsonic bombers like B-2 are now more or less obsolete against sophisticated opponents , and by the time PAK DA becomes complete they would be slightly better then Tu-95 i.e. enemy would be able to detect them at long ranges.

Therefore, according to them, future bomber should be able to perform long supersonic dashes flying at 2+ Mach , and defend itself with powerful EW suite . Concept is not exactly new, Tu-160 was created exactly for the same purpose . It was fastest strategic bomber in the world, able to outrun almost all NATO fighters in that time at longer distances (lots of fuel for afterburners) . Reportedly, EW suite was very capable at that time . Now they want something even faster able to outrun F-22 and to jam current equipment .

Would that kill PAK DA I do not know . Everything is still in the distant future . One thing is certain, production of Su-34 is ramping up . More and more aircraft have been delivered to operational units . One example had ... unfortunate landing :D ... and ended up looking like this

No Komrade! this is just the way we change tires in the Motherland!, Looks like he needs two right mains, and we'll have this flying next week, Friday at the latest!

I bet the WSO needed a dry pampers, however that rather homely aft cockpit structure looks to have kept the cockpit intake, no doubt will need an airfreshener komrade??? Why I tell you lads it takes a couple of rocks in your pocket to fly one of these!
