Alexander Mercouris said in today's video that Russian media have reported that the Russian MOD is now using pulse jet engined FAB bombs to increase their accuracy and range. V-1 anyone? Not sure if it's true, but thought it was worth mentioning.

He talks about it at around 48:10

It is not impossible. But there are other possibilities. United Engine Corporation in Russia recently signed a deal to acquire Reynolds. This was a private company in Russia which makes small jet engines. It is expected these will be used in military drones and production will be expanded. But they would also likely have enough power for something like the UMPK FAB.

Not sure why they would use pulsejets, while Russians mastered small form factor jet engine for years already. Also Grom propelled guided bombs exist.

Cost. Pulsejets are much simpler and use much less parts. Jets are more complex since they have turbine blades and more moving parts. And turbofans even more complex. With the twin spool mechanism and the fan section.

Currently I think the Russians mass produce turbofans. These are used for long range cruise missiles. They have more endurance and consume less fuel. Like thousands of kilometers range. But these turbofans also get to also be used in other missiles where they are overkill for the purpose and make the whole thing way more expensive than it should be.

Does it make sense to use the same engine that is on the Kalibr on something like the Kh-59 or smaller? But from what I get this is what is happening.

The prototype of the Russian modernized combat training aircraft Yak-130M was shown at the 2024 forum. The main goal of the modernization is to expand the combat capabilities of the aircraft. The new Yak-130M will become a full-fledged light attack aircraft. Technical specifications in the links to the video in the comments to the video. The Yak-130M aircraft is equipped with systems that significantly increase its capabilities: the BRLS-130R onboard radar station, the SOLT-130K optical-laser thermal television system, the President-S130 onboard defense system, and the KSS-130 communications system. New systems and air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles will ensure the use of the Yak-130M aircraft for training and combat purposes around the clock and in difficult weather conditions.

They replaced imported components. The HUD was imported from Ukraine, and the LCDs used in the MFDs were imported from France. It should have a new cockpit and flight computers. More common with other modern Flankers. The radar was improved. They replaced the radar's klystron with one of the klystrons used in the Irbis-E radar. This boosted the radar emitter power. They also claim some improvements were made to the electronics in the radar. It should have software support for more advanced weapons like the R-37M AAM.

This is an intermediate development since in the long term it is supposed to get the AL-41 engine and Irbis-E radar. As for my guess as to why they did not add the AL-41 already it probably requires changes to the airframe or making a specific version of the engine for it. And Irbis-E won't work without the AL-41 because it needs more engine power to operate than the old engine can produce.

Well, the thristiest part of a radar would be the transmitter which contain the TWT (Travelling Wave Tube).. Bars and Irbis is using TWT's. It doesnt make any sense to get Irbis transmitter into Bars without also changing the engine if it was indeed need more engine power.
