The Tactical Missiles Corporation (TMC) company is completing official trials of the Kh-58UShK anti-radiation missile intended to be fired from the internal weapons bay of the Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA fifth-generation fighter, general director Boris Obnosov told IHS Jane's at Airshow China 2014.

"It is an absolutely innovative item, having nothing common with the old X-58 missile except the similarity in designation. It is 0.5 m shorter than the Kh-58 and equipped with a new seeker. We are finishing the official trials of the new missiles, including launches from the T-50 prototypes," Obnosov said, adding that it could also be mounted on the external weapons carriage of the MiG-35, Su-30MK, Su-34, and Su-35 fighters.

The missile is being developed by a TMC subsidiary, the Raduga (Rainbow) state design bureau, which is based at Dubna city near Moscow. Official trials are to be completed and serial production to start in 2015.

The old Kh-58 missile could be equipped with one of a selection of four passive seekers, designed to target radars working at the different frequency ranges. The new Kh-58UShK missile has an innovative broadband passive radar seeker that allows it to target modern ground-based radars working at frequency ranges between 1.2 GHz and 11 GHz.

The new missile weighs 650 kg with a warhead weight of 149 kg, is 4.19 m long, has a wingspan of 0.8 m, and a diameter of 0.38 m. The Kh-58UShK's maximum speed is 4,200 km/h and it can be launched at aircraft speeds of Mach 0.47-1.5. It can also be launched at altitudes between 20-20,000 m, providing a maximum range varying between 76-245 km. The minimum range is 10-12 km, this at a launch height of 200 m. The Kh-58UShK has an 80% probability of striking within 20 m of the target emmiter.

The presence of the missile at Airshow China 2014 is noteworthy given the Chinese development of fifth-generation fighters such as the J-20 and J-31, which are both equipped with internal weapons bays.

MOSCOW — Moscow on Wednesday denied it was ramping up its military presence in neighboring Ukraine after NATO sounded the alarm over columns of Russian military equipment entering the ex-Soviet country over the past two days.

But Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said Russia was keeping its troops on combat alert in the south of the country because of an increased “foreign” military presence on its border.

“We have stopped paying attention to unfounded statements by NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Philip Breedlove about his ‘seeing’ Russian military columns that are allegedly invading Ukraine,” defence ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov told Russian news agencies.

Ukraine said earlier it was readying for fresh combat operations in the war-torn east, fueling fears of a return to all-out conflict despite a two-month-old ceasefire deal which has halted fighting along much of the frontline.

Separately, Shoigu expressed concern over the security situation in southwestern Russia.

“In many respects it is related to the situation in Ukraine, the inflaming of anti-Russian sentiments by NATO and an increase in the foreign military presence in the immediate proximity to our borders,” Shoigu was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies at a government meeting.

Shoigu said the current security situation called for Russia to keep its forces in the southern military district combat-ready.

One of the priority tasks, Shoigu said, would be establishing a “full-blown” military force in Crimea, which Russian annexed from Ukraine in March.

TBILISI, Georgia — Tens of thousands of people rallied in Georgia's capital on Saturday to protest a planned agreement between Russia and Georgia's separatist province.

The demonstrators were denouncing the deal to be signed by Russia and Abkhazia province as a step toward annexation of the Black Sea region by Moscow. Abkhazia has been running its own affairs since a separatist war in the early 1990s, and Moscow bolstered its military presence there following a 2008 Russian-Georgian war.

The proposed agreement envisages the creation of joint Russian and Abkhazian military forces.

The protesters carried posters saying "Stop Russia!" and crossed out pictures of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many were carrying U.S., EU and Ukrainian flags, the latter to back Ukraine regarding Moscow's decisions to annex Crimea and support the pro-Russian insurgency in eastern Ukraine.

The rally of about 30,000 people was organized by former Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili's United National Movement. It has been in opposition since losing the 2012 parliamentary election to the Georgian Dream party, which was founded by billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, who made his fortune in Russia.

Saakashvili, speaking to the rally via video link, accused government officials of taking advice from Moscow and failing to defend national interests, obediently "bowing their heads and following the (Russian) bear." He said, "On the one side, there is Georgia that is fighting for its dignity, despite enormous pressure. But on the other side there is Georgia that is bowing its head and trailing the bear."

Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili sought to deflect such criticism by saying in a statement on Friday that the government is aware of the threat posed by the Russia-Abkhazia deal and has appealed to the West to help oppose it.
