Iran and Russia created a joint operations headquarters to fight the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization in Iraq, the Iranian Tasnimnews agency reported citing an Iraqi source.

Reportedly, the Iranian and Russian military experts are helping the Iraqi commanders in the fight against the IS.

“Over 60 military experts from Russia and Iran created a joint operations headquarters in the Al Rasheed Hotel in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad,” the report said.

The terrorist organization known as the ‘Islamic State’ (IS, formerly ISIL or ISIS) was created in 2003 in Iraq. Between 2004 and 2006, the organization was led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, and consisted of 11 radical Islamist groups, which had close ties to the terrorist organization Al-Qaeda.

Doesn't the "nuclear-powered" deserve some remark?

Well, design is unfinished, but historically destroyer leaders (flotilla leaders) were in fact very close to light cruisers. For that role nuclear power maybe adequate . For example, USN had ships with similar displacement and nuclear propulsion ( Virginia-class , California - class ... )

It seems to me that Russia is unlikely to operate all over the world and that as a major oil producer it has considerably less incentive to use nuclear power in ships of this kind than US which played with such ships but abandoned them some time ago.
I'm expecting the use of Thorium Molten Salt Reactors for ship propulsion but not as soon as in ten years time.

Well, if those ships are indeed nuclear powered, reason could be much more prosaic . USSR/Russia used steam turbines on most of their large ships (Kuznetsov-class, Kiev-class, partially even on Slava-class ) and had problems with them. Maybe they simply decided they have enough of that and switched to more successful nuclear power .

MOSCOW, October 22. /TASS/. A Just Russia Party has submitted a bill to the State Duma, Russia’s lower house of parliament, on establishing private military and security companies (PMCs) in Russia.

The PMCs could specialize in providing military and security services to the state, individuals and legal entities on a contract basis, in line with the initiative proposed by lawmaker Gennady Nosovko.

In particular, the military services include “mine clearance on the territories and at buildings, armed escort of sea vessels and alternative settlement of armed conflicts outside Russia.”

The companies could also render security services to state institutions, military facilities, commercial vessels, high-ranking officials and escort columns and convoys.

The private contractors will have the right to use physical force, special means and firearms.

The document has been drafted taking into consideration the international practice, namely in the United States where private military companies have been operating successfully, the party says.

Not a very good thing . Now we have essentially two coalitions, one Sunni one Shia, both with foreign backing , both ostensibly made to fight IS , but in fact looking to undermine each other .
The US actions against IS were moderate because they didn't want to anger the sponsors Saudi Arabia and Turkey but they were interested in damaging Iran and Syria. So if the new coalition prevent the older one from straying from fighting IS that is all to the good.

Nuclear powered ships all use their reactors to generate steam. So they continue to use steam turbines.
