Probably doesn't quite fit here, but I didn't want to start a new topic!
At first glance, it seems like a bad joke, but the site is official after all: So, does anyone know what's behind it?
It is certainly no stupid claim when the Soviet Union was one of the few countries to actually develop a supersonic passenger aircraft. And the organizations which did both the airframe and engines for the Tu-144 are all located in the Russian Federation. Namely Tupolev and Kuznetsov. As for the new supersonic aircraft they want to develop, I have shown artist pictures of its intended fuselage here before. But - at least by my understanding and what others say - why then did the Embassy of Russia in South Africa make such an either stupid claim or stupid mistake? They surely know to speak English in a proper way.
Several configurations of the airframe are being wind tunnel tested.
This is a scaled model of a concept design showing several technologies being developed.
Back when the decision for Tupolev to restart production of the Tu-160 bomber was made, a long time ago, Putin asked United Aircraft Corporation to also make a supersonic aircraft product for the civilian market. TsAGI has been working doing wind tunnel testing of airframes and creating computer models for the effect of supersonic aircraft noise on the ground. Airframes with low supersonic boom characteristics are being developed. So this is pretty serious work. It wouldn't be surprising if a product eventually showed up.
