Russia sells S-400 systems to China

I have said it long time ago, among the Su-35, S-400, Lada sub deals. The S-400 is the only one that might go through, because China has some need for it against Japan or Taiwan.

Now it happen, which makes sense and it is good. China can deploy S-400 against Japan and especially Taiwan, due to its 400 KM range which is twice that of HQ-9 and S-300.

The only sell point of the Su-35 is now 117S engine, but China is not interested, because we have already seen 6 J-20 prototypes already.

North Korea is still interested in the SU-35, perhaps they can hope China will buy it for them.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I thought china is working on extended range/ER variant of the HQ 9... If not I don't see how or why they cannot be developed in house. They certainly have the expertise and resources to do it if they really want to.

The "extended range HQ-9" refers to the HQ-9C. Even though it may have improved on this parameter compared to its predecessor, the S-400 still probably offers greater electronic capability, speed, range, and maneuvering.

Of course, I suspect that a notional S-400 purchase will only be a stop-gap measure due to the development, and perhaps imminent deployment, of the HQ-29 (PAC-3 equivalent), HQ-26 (SM-3 equivalent), and HQ-19 (THAAD-ER equivalent).

No, PAC-3 is purely a Anti-ballistic missile variant of the PAtriot. It has a shorter range, but a much increased lethality against ballistic missiles.

The closer comparison to the S-400 would be the THAAD System, whose missiles have a range approaching 300km. The first battalion of THAADS were deployed in 2008. Since then it has been deployed in numerous places, including Mt. Keren in Israel and Turkey (Incerlik I believe).

Oman and the UAE have also purchased the system.

Lockheed wants to develop an ER version of THAADS, but that has not happened yet.

Is anyone aware of how or where China intends to deploy the S-400?
Will it be a new layer augmentation of existing Air Defences on the Chinese mainland or is it intended as a stand alone system in more remote, isolated and vulnerable positions?
I am thinking of all the new island building in the CSC in particular.

I'm guessing China will probably put their best air defense systems to protect Beijing and Shanghai area just like what they are doing now. I forgot where I saw this map a while back showing the SAM sites of HQ-9 and S-300 were the most around these two areas.
