Are there weight/size restrictions on helicopters operating from ships the way there are for fixed wing planes?
So this Ka52 purchase has went from "BS fanboi fantasy" to "sure thing, absolute winner all around" in about a week! Deino will be pleased!
Indeed ... the funny or IMO quite typical part is how it evolved:
It all started (at least by my understanding) via a report about the Ka-52 in CCTV ... this was picked up by some social media nerds spicing it up with "eventual PLAN interest", some fancy CGs and a lot of discussion ... after a few days, more credible sources like certain Weibo-posters pick up that story only as a news without adding much but right thereafter it is seen as some sort of "where is smoke, there is fire" and "since XXX posted it, there must be something behind ...".
And now after about one week, we have still nothing official, neither by any Chinese nor Russian site, no true big-shrimp (again IMO) noted, there is indeed a rumour but the story has already reached a level of "being confirmed" that the discussion circles already around price, numbers and operational considerations as if an invasion of Taiwan is already planned for next week.
So in case I missed it ... what are the facts by now, are there any serious hints or is it still only smoke and rumour?
"Look, the Chinese are also looking into buying these fine Ka-52, you don't have to trust me but..." (While talking with the Vietnamese but also wink-wink to IndiaNot sure if you folks saw this yet but Vietnamese media crew also got a tour for Ka-52K, so frankly that could suggest IMO this is more a Russian sales push than interest on behalf of the Chinese.
The military delegation of China and a Russian arms export company signed a contract for naval aviation armaments during last month’s Russian Army 2021 Technology Forum.
The Chinese side will import 36 Ka-52K Katran or Ka-52M heavy-armed helicopters from Russia for $20 million each, which will directly equip the Chinese Navy’s amphibious ships, according to Hong Kong Phoenix TV.
Hmm ...
I must admit I'm still most sceptical since I haven't heard about this deal from any official source and "according to Hong Kong Phoenix TV" does not sound very reliable!
But why was this deal not mentioned by any official Russian site? Usually they go up "Party like a Russian" in such cases:
