Bump! Ila 2008 on its way!
2007, December 13
Interest in ILA2008 is high
Early bookings for the ILA the highest to date -
preparations under way for around 100 conferences
Berlin, 13 December 2007 – Six months before the International Aerospace Exhibition opens its doors the number of early bookings received for the ILA2008 are the highest at any time in the previous history of the fair. Compared with the ILA2006 the number of exhibitors who have registered at the Berlin Air Show for fair stands, chalets and to display aircraft has risen by around eight per cent, including numerous leading companies from all walks of the aerospace industry. From 27 May to 1 June 2008 the International Aerospace Exhibition on the southern section of Berlin-Schönefeld Airport will be putting the latest products and services of this high-tech sector on display. The first three days of the ILA (27 to 29 May) are reserved exclusively for trade visitors. During the weekend when the show will be open to the public (30 May to 1 June) a spectacular programme of flying displays featuring aircraft of all categories and sizes will take place.
The reason for the high number of bookings stems from the fact that the aerospace industry’s order books are full and that the number of exhibitors from western European countries and the USA has risen, but also from the fact that individual business sectors are concentrated in specific locations at the ILA2008. They include Commercial Aviation, Space Flight, Defence and Security, Equipment, Engines and Materials, alongside the International Suppliers Center (ISC) and General Aviation, the HeliCenter, the General Aviation Avenue and the new Corporate Aviation Center (CAC). Around 100 conferences will accompany the show, enhancing the quality aspect of the ILA2008 yet again, and underlining its standing as the world’s leading international aerospace exhibition and conference event. An extensive programme of visits by delegations will accompany the show. They will include “Parliamentarians’ and Ambassadors’ Day” and, by invitation of the German Air Force Chief of Staff, a meeting of the heads of European air forces.
Commercial aviation
Against a backdrop of increasing air traffic and efforts to reduce the environmental impact of air transport the ILA currently reflects the challenges facing the international aviation industry. It offers all partners in aviation, i.e. manufacturers, airlines, airports and air traffic controllers, an ideal platform for presenting new products and for dialogue with politics and the media. In particular the introduction of the A380 Airbus to regular airline services will be attracting interest.
Space flight takes centre stage at the Space Pavilion and Space World
Compared with 2006 the space flight presentations at the ILA2008 will be even larger, underlining the ILA’s standing as Europe’s leading trade fair for space flight. The European Space Agency (ESA), the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) will have current and future German and European space flight programmes on display at the SPACE PAVILION. The main topics will be manned space missions (ISS, COLUMBUS, ATV), exploring the moon and Mars, and applications relevant to space flight. Numerous national and international exhibitors representing the space flight industry will be at the SPACE WORLD. Companies, space flight agencies and organisations from around the world, along with their partners and competitors, will be displaying their projects and products in front of a large audience of experts, the media and the general public. A quality programme of conferences awaits trade visitors at the show. On 28 May SPACE DAY will function as an information centre and meeting place for space flight experts from around the world. International panels with high-ranking participation will discuss space flight developments at national and international level. The BDLI is planning a joint conference with the German Air Force on 29 May on the subject of military exploitation of space.
ISC promotes dialogue between suppliers and systems manufacturers
At the ILA2008 the International Suppliers Center ISC will be open only on the three days reserved for trade visitors (27 to 29 May). As an exhibition and a communication platform the ISC’s aim is to promote dialogue between suppliers and systems manufacturers in the context of restructuring efforts taking place in the components industry. Companies such as Diehl, EADS, Liebherr, MTU, Rolls Royce and other aerospace leaders have already announced their support for the ISC and will be attending the show with expert buyers. This is the first time that the US industry giant Exostar will be represented at the ISC. Exostar is a leading US company providing an impartial internet platform for suppliers to all sectors of the aerospace and defence industries. An Exostar forum on 27 May will be focusing on the topic of internet-based organisation of the supply chain.
Bundeswehr displays all its aircraft
The German armed forces will be displaying every type of aircraft at the ILA2008 and will be performing military flying displays. Be it a Eurofighter, Tiger helicopter or P-3C Orion, all the aircraft and helicopters currently in use will be on display to the public, including the Bundeswehr’s MedEvac-Airbus. The focus will be on pilot training measures. Visitors can test their flying skills in a Eurofighter simulator supplied by EADS and find out about the Bundeswehr as an employer, and in particular about careers in flying. The armed forces and air force will also give demonstrations showing the Bundeswehr’s broad range of capabilities in its role as a modern army in combat.
GA – Europe’s general aviation shopping mall
The ILA Berlin Airshow is the only trade fair where business jets, helicopters, sports and private aeroplanes, i.e. all sectors of general aviation (GA) are equally represented. For the first time the new ILA Corporate Aviation Center (CAC) will be providing an exclusive area for business jets, with chalets and its own static displays. The ILA General Aviation Avenue has made a name for itself as an international general aviation shopping mall. The aircraft on show will range from two-seaters to personal jets. This is the first time that the Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association (LAMA) will be represented at the ILA. A number of companies belonging to the association will be displaying their latest models for private use in the General Aviation Hall.
HeliCenter with its own heliport
The ILA HeliCenter will be the main meeting place for the helicopter industry, and is where all activities concerning this market will be concentrated. The HeliCenter will include a static display featuring all kinds of helicopters, chalets, a Heli Hall with stands run by organisations, equipment manufacturers and the large air rescue services. This is also where the supporting conferences of the helicopter industry will be taking place. Among the principal themes will be the deployment of helicopters worldwide, and current issues concerning air rescue operations. The HeliCenter will also feature its own heliport which will enable clients to fly regardless of the flying display programme.
Around 100 conferences accompanying the show
In 2008 the ILA will once again be underlining its standing as the world’s leading international aerospace exhibition and conference event by holding around 100 national and international conferences. Discussions will range from efforts to reduce the environmental impact of air transport, to helicopter operations in the event of natural disasters. The 3rd Future Military Pilot Training Conference will be devoting itself to the challenges encountered during military pilot training. The European Conference on Materials and Structures in Aerospace (EUCOMAS) will present the latest findings in the field of material and processing technology, as well as relevant applications. The 2nd EU Conference on General Aviation will be discussing the current challenges and prospects facing general aviation in Europe. In the conference area at the HeliCenter the participants will be examining the concepts and challenges with regard to police use of helicopters. There will also be conferences on space flight, unmanned aerial vehicles, security policy issues and questions of transport. The main sponsor of the ILA conferences is the renowned American trade publication “Aviation Week & Space Technology” (New York). Regular updates of the conference programme are available on the ILA website at
Background information
Since it first took place in 1909 the ILA has ranked as the world’s oldest air show. It is organised jointly by the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) and Messe Berlin. Since 1992 the ILA has taken place in Berlin/Brandenburg every two years, comprehensively reflecting the aerospace industry at an international trade show and conference venue that caters for the public as well. The ILA is also the only aerospace exhibition in Europe to act as a platform for markets in Western, Central and Eastern Europe. 1,014 exhibitors from 42 countries took part in the ILA2006, and some 250,000 trade visitors and members of the public witnessed the 340 aircraft they exhibited both on the ground and in the air.
