10-4, Congratulations Sir!
and thank you for taking your responsibility seriously, feels good doesn't it??
I thought I'd let you guys know, I'm going into Hospital on dec 6th for a fairly major operation, so I may be a bit quiet on here for a few weeks afterwards. I'm having a Gastric mini Bypass, as I have a condition called Gastroparesis. Basically my Diabetes has killed off a lot of the nerves and muscles in my digestive tract. Food backs up in my stomach for seven days instead of seven hours, and it's only the next thing I eat that pushes things through. I'll spare you the grisly details of other effects it has, suffice to say everywhere I go I know exactly where the Toilets are...
It's a three hour op. Not that I care, I'll be drugged up to the eyeballs for the duration. I'll be in hospital for two days afterwards whilst they check I haven't sprung any leaks, then six weeks at home on the most restricted diet imaginable. For the first two weeks I'll just be allowed half a glass of water a few times a day ad a multi vitamin pill. Or something like that,, my mind keeps blocking out the details. Then I progress to pureed food for a couple of weeks and almost real food after that. It'll be a quiet Christmas in this household, I'll tell you now!
Actually the diet starts two weeks before the op, on the 22nd. I have to stop eating real food and switch to Slimfast and similar drinks, in order to reduce my Liver's size before the op. They need room to work apparently...

Well, wish me luck, keep 'em crossed, whatever floats your boat. I do know the surgeon is apparently the best in Europe, he lives in Guernsey and only works one day a week in the UK! I am honoured. I'll be a round for a while yet but time flies when you don't want it to, so

Best of luck with the surgery! I've had to undergo two surgeries for pneumothorax in the same year when I was 15 so I know how much it sucks to stay in a hospital for several days.

About 3 years ago i went into hospital to have 3 hernias fixed.the op went smoothly enough except i felt a bit under the weather which i thought was due to the general anesthetic I had as they were not able to give me a Spinal.
They decided to keep me in hospital for a MRI scan which revealed a Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the pancreas.This was monitored for a while before they decided to give me a Pancreation Resection which saw other bits removed as well.
When I opened my eyes there was the hospital chaplin standing near my bed and i reckon I must have died from fright.
Well anyway it all turned out well and while most that had my condition , usually have an expetantcy of 10yrs , theyre resonally certain Im clear as it was caught early.To date Ive gone longer than a lot of othervarious pancreatic patients.for which im thankful. I even asked them if they would give me a script for a sackload of Viagra if I was on borrowed time.
i A little while earlier to this incidence I had a traffic accident in the US. (not my fault). While a need hip replacement I also got a bang on my head. While not too serious, while outwardly I show little effects of the bang I find my ability to concentrate and write coherently.
This is the longest I have written for a long time.

Yes indeed all my medical problems are Diabetes related. Both my parents are diabetic, my mum had gestational diabetes when all three of us were born (My eldest brother was 10lbs, the next was 13lbs and I was 11lbs, but I was four weeks premature...), whilst my Dad developed type 2 diabetes in his 60s. Genetically, I was screwed from day 1! My Diabetes has been firmly under control for the last few years, but it's the knock on effects of the conditions it caused (Neuropathy, Addisons disease and Gastroparesis) that give me problems on a day to day basis. I'm 48 and have to use a walking stick to walk even short distances because of the Neuropathy in my feet, robbing me of the balance information your feet normally give you.
I've managed to avoid major operations in my life so far. I haven't had a General anaesthetic since I was about five and that was at the Dentists. They don't do that anymore, you have to enjoy the needle instead these days. I've had two Cataract operations on my eyes (so now I don't need glasses, except for reading) and 8 laser retinopathy treatments, all under local jabs. So I have three hours in the land of Nod to look forward to and eating next to nothing for an eight week period (two weeks before and six after). Christmas will be pretty quiet in this household! But then, to be fair it usually is...

Diabetes really is an unfortunate disease with some tough sequelae, I hope the operation helps to improve your quality of life in time.
