Yeah, i forgot to mention Turkey. On the way that the new weapons are designed, it seems that the focus is to completely arm and modernize in their internal demands, mainly on their forces that are expected to see action soon. The new family of small arms that use 5.8x42, seems to not be built with the possibility of using other traditional cartridges. The way that there are not mentions about future export models seems to suggest that these guns are intended to be to "Only the Chinese".
That's not to say that is impossible that they offer export models in the future. I see the QBZ-191 in 5.56x45 not as an complete analog to the HK416, but the SIG 550 series. You get what i mean? A rifle that likes dressing itself up and adopting the customs of western rifles from an early age since its family moved up, and denies its ethnic Kalashnikov family roots due to internalized oppression. It's like an smash of SIG 552, HK416, a bit of an ACR an an AK magazine.
I'm not sure if in such scenario, the NORINCO engineers would be able to design a reliable STANAG compatible receiver in this gun, and if in all these years they have been able to develop a better design, but it is understandable that this has been not an research priority. A solution would be to build proprietary magazines, which is not so bad idea if the target customers are special forces. This happens with SIG and GALIL.
I haven't seen a lot of publicity about HR31, meaning that they are not betting too much on them. The Chinese export market is focused on bargain guns that are not too finicky, to sell to impoverished militias in warfare or to quickly and inexpensively arm their entire rank and file, mainly countries seeking to arm their cannon fodder proxies. Selling cheap arms with good quality for the civilian market in countries like Pakistan and Canada has it's healthy revenues, but not too big. Selling high-tier weapons for special elite troops is not a niche they re focusing, for now.
The PLA is using a new denomination system now. This makes it easier to categorize which role and family each gun belongs to, and separate them from older weapons. QBZ-19 is not a gun made in 1919. The carbine is not QBZ-20, or QBZ-19B. Any QBZ-19X would be an variant or redesign without spelling complications.
By the way, i think i read a Chinese-only article about the Gobi desert excersise, or the international army competition, about how the Russians got to use the qbz-191 and praised it, i think they even liked it more than their AK-12. Need someone to confirm this.
