Progress-Ivchenko's new fighter jet engine

9500kg is the new medium thrust engine project objective, maybe they simply bought the design? This engine would be a RD33 class power plant, way larger than what the L15 needs.

No.... DIfferent class of engine .

This new engine will push a single seat L-15 into LCA territory. Imagine that, a better design than the Tejas and in production in about third the time. I’m being sarcastic of course.

However, it would be interesting to see a fighter version of the L-15 go up against a Tejas or an F-CK-1 Ching-kuo

Huhu ... why should they redesign the whole fuselage to fit a substantially different aircraft with the result of a marginal performance plus ?? De facto - like You said - it will be a type in the class of the LCA .. or FC-1/JF-17 and as such it's a waste of efforts.

IMO the best way is to fit this type into the JL-9 maybe or the rumoured J-21 as an alternative engine or simply to further develop the twin-engined L-15 into updated trainers/LIFT or single-seat CAS-versions.

I wish to disagree. The engines in question are the same as those currently installed on the L-15, it is the afterburner capability, which has been enhanced to 9,000+lb of thrust (each engine). There would therefore be no substantial modification of the rear engine enclosure, and the aircraft would continue to be twin engined.

In order to increase the thrust of the usual AI-222 to that level You definitly have to increase the diameter ... as such it is maybe based on the same core but de facto a new engine !

Again Deino I wish to disagree. The engines in question are of the same diameter, the only change is in the length of the afterburner chamber. Please see the article published by the Ivchenko-Progress Site in the above link. The AI-222-25F engine maintains the same diameter as the AI-222-25, which is 860mm.
Since the engines in the L-15 are deep set (i.e. in the interior of the aircraft) they already have a long exhaust chamber to exit the aircraft. The engine length of the AI-222-25 is 2,100mm with an exhaust chamber of 1000mm+/- the length of the AI-222-25F with after burner is 3,070mm; almost the same length, and without a change in the center of gravity of the main location of the powerplant. The installation of the AI-222-25F could be made (with minimal changes) to the L-15 and providing the aircraft with additional thrust for use as a LCA.
This is very similar to what the Americans did with the T-38 conversion to the F-5A the non-afterburning engine was substituted for one with an afterburner.
