PRC/PLAN Laser and Rail Gun Development Thread

Could this potentially be a naval version ETC gun, since there was some talk awhile ago about ETC gun research for tanks and SPGs.

From the barrel, it doesn’t look like a rail gun or coil gun, so if it’s not just a larger caliber naval gun then the most likely candidate would be a prototype naval variant of an ETC gun originally developed for 155 SPGs.

Some images of the LY-1 naval laser from the parade.

The genset at the back of the truck looks huge, any estimate on how large is the power output?

I have seen commercial civilian truck mounted genset rated from 20KW to 2000KW.

It is not intend to be carried by the truck, which is there only to provide transport for the parade. It is a ship mounted laser and lower end estimate for max power is 300KW.

That's odd then. If it was only for the show, they could have used a flatbed truck or trailer. Would make more sense if this is a variant of the ship borne version and meant to be a point AD for locations accessible by paved roads.

The laser displayed is real. If they put the package directly on a flatbed it will expose all the unsightly stuff like wires and coolant pipes.

If they can haul an HQ-10 launcher on a flatbed without all the unsightly stuff exposed, they should be able to wrap this laser in a neat package, too.

The trucks carrying this laser do not look similar to any other ones in the parade. I find it hard to believe that they had to specially build them just for the show. At the same time, all other ship borne weapons like the YJ and HHQ missiles were simply on flatbeds.

Pretty sure like any other weapons system the intent is to have both land and sea based versions.

Just read a post by 万年炎帝 and it appears to be the correct assessment.

Important thing is that it is going to be able to hard kill cruise missiles and dazzle optical sensors from much farther. It is likely the most powerful electrical laser weapon ever created by humans (Airborne Laser was a chemical laser).
