It's not a couple of frigates docking there but someone just took two 054A superstructures and put them on both end of the structure beside the runway. Either it was some kind of point about these structures being capable for military purpose or some CGI workers just got lazy about designing superstructures for the artificial island.

Great photos, Zetageist and jkliz! I'm surprised the runway does not extend to the edge of the island. Will that just be extra space in case the plane touches down early or overshoots the runway? It would be incredibly risky to put any in the flight path.

China appears to be expanding the northern end of the island with small scale reclamation. Do you think China will keep the numerous roll-on/roll-off piers permanently, or are they only used during construction?

By looking at the progression of runway, your photo looks like the same one I posted, taken on March 23, 2015. The cloud covering photo that jkliz posted is the newer photo. The link I provided shows the full size enlarged photo.
