PLAN SCS Bases/Islands/Vessels (Not a Strategy Page)

All the islands in the Paracels are controlled by China. If you remember, China recently said they will stop reclamation in Nansha (Spratly) Islands. As I suspected, they relocated all their dredgers to work on the Paracel Islands, which is much closer to Hainan Island.

China would retain and preserve all the forest and greenery. Only the surrounding low lying areas are reclaimed. In time to come, they will also become green.

Look at this post for more details. Tree Island is in this map.

Are they using dredgers in the Paracels? My layman's impression is that dredgers are fast, but also environmentally damaging because of the destruction of corals. Its used in the Spratleys because they are a) further away from China and
b) islands need to be reclaimed faster because China didn't have much in the way of bases there unlike in the Paracels

The Paracels are much closer. Couldn't they just divert soil from some other part of China and dump it in the area they want?

Corals will die anyways once you bury them with to make new land.

And as general rule, you don't want to be building anything on freshly dead organic material because said dead organic material will decay. In doing so, they loose structural integrity and mass, creating dangerous cavities under you, and also release gases that can be harmful to people.

It's why building on former landfill sites are generally a terrible idea.

Better by far to dedege away the coral and build on the seabed directly.

Though it would be nice if as much resource can be committed later to encourage reef growth via artificial reefs to help offset.

I would expect that to be part of the design of the new islands.

Coral reefs would help massively to create a natural defense against erosion of the land China has spend so much to create by acting as self repairing wave breakers and ablative armour for the man made land and defences.

In decades time, the net environmental impact of China's island building will in all likelihood be positive, since the new land would have created a far larger natural habitat for coral and wildlife that depend on them, and would have been aided by man-made environments that should be better suited to coral than naturally occurring ones if everything was designed well. Which we have every reason to believe so given how meticulously the Chinese government plan big projects like this, and how long these plans would have been in the works.

well ...... the coral reef are affected by dredging is not small, but in percentage is really nothing ... after a few years, sea life, including coral and fish will flourish, back to "normal", like nothing has happened. There are a lot of ways and technologies to encourage/boost coral and fish to flourish in the area

There is a recent flurry of new pictures.

This one shows the 3 biggest islands with the measurements of their runways. They are shown in their proportional sizes, i.e. to scale. The file is big, 1 MB. Click on the picture to see its full size version.

This one shows all the Chinese islands in their respective sizes. In the center is Taiping Island which was the largest previously. This is also another big file, 1 MB. Click on it to see its full size version.

I just noticed that the southern part of Mischief Island is bigger than Chigua (Johnson south), Nanxun (Gaven) and Dongmen (Hughes). It's slightly smaller than Huayang (Cuateron).
