Guys, this thread is about the PLAN/PRC islands and bases in the SCS.

Talk about what may or may not be stationed there is one thing, and generally okay.

Extending that talk into direct PRC vs US war scenarios, war talk, and all of the various Us vs Them discussion that goes with it is Off Topic and also against SD Froum Rules.

Back on Topic please.

DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MODERATION.

Chigua (Johnson South) Island. It's fast becoming a little village. That white building is estimated to have 9 floors.
Dongmen (Hughes) Island. Also has a massive new building adjacent to the original outpost.

Other photos show that the pier area of both of these seem to have 2 administrative buildings being constructed. One appears to be 12m by 8m, the other is 25m by 15m, and the light house is just 12 metres setback from the larger building. They resemble your basic Chinese check in, such as at a business entrance, or toll road gate, or school. Small structure on the left, larger building to the side, light house set off and behind these two buildings. Room between the two for a road.

{Mod: Doing my best to meet your rules. Thanks!}

Better for China to be a reasonable and peaceful Super Power and be friends to most neighboring nations. It doesn't seem to be going towards this direction judging from its recent assertive operations in the South and East China Seas. All the move towards cooperation thru' China's AIIB (Asian International Infrastructure Bank) would be meaningless and unsuccessful if there are hostilities in the Asian region.
China has solved the border problems with all its neighbours except India so it is already a reasonable and peaceful Super Power.

Well delft, not to nitpick, but every point you made is suspect. I say that because:
  • You may be forgiven for thinking Bhutan is part of India, since India runs its foreign policy, nevertheless it's a separate country with unresolved border with China
  • Few of China's SCS neighbors would say it's "reasonable," due to it's activities in the SCS. It goes without saying Japan and ROK wouldn't agree China is reasonable in the ECS
  • "Peaceful" isn't the word China's neighbors would use to describe its salami slicing in the SCS
  • There's only one superpower on the planet currently, and it's not China. A great power it is, but not yet a superpower

Why the antique J-8 jets?

The first reason: because they would be seen as less threatening than modern (especially multirole) jets, and have an obvious role of intercepting aircraft getting too close.

The second reason would be to remind the US of the Hainan incident and encourage them not to get too close.

Still how many people died from this SCS dispute lately? Now compare that to the Crimea situation with Ukraine and Russia right now is very big difference. It is only became an issue because the media wants it to be because it wants to stir up as much ill feelings towards China.

My point was, it wouldn't make a differece how old or new these jets were; China is going to be lambasted anyways if it deploys military assets. The Chinese might as well maximize their capabilities on the island in the mean time.
