That won't work for islands, Crimea is big, about 100 km across, 80 km tall i.e. it is almost as big as Taiwan. there are lots of room to move equipment around to hide them from enemy action. Putting expensive weapons on an island the biggest being 10 km at its widest... is like shooting fish in a barrel.

What China is doing is like what the USA had done in Panama Canal or the British in the Suez Canal, Gibraltar; they are investing a lot of money into it so that when an other country threaten these islands, it would become a legitimate concern for the Chinese military to react; Just as how the British/French intervened in Egypt 1956 and the USA in Panama 1989. Likewise, the artificial islands are for the same purpose as the canals, they are control of trade.

It would be very helpful in establishing a baseline for arguments/debates/compromises (or no compromises) if China files papers with the UN and clearly define what it claims in the SCS, and what exactly the the 9-dash line means.

I don't think China would do that, just put civilians ... nobody would attack civilians as it means big war with China and everybody would be on Chinese side

The lagoon is almost 8 miles in its diameter.o
It can host hundred of fishing ships, patrol ships, warships. With that kind of number of ships it can control spratley area.

Wellington harbour is only approximately 6 miles in diameter .... so Mischieff lagoon is almost 80% bigger in area ... huge
