Can some one identify the lead ship in this last picture?
Yes, that is a PLAN Type 072 III LST Amphibious Ship.

Here's another angle:

...and another view of the class:

Same type of ship trailing the Type 071 LPD in the picture I posted. They are very decent, modern, LST designs...they have bow doors that open to allow amphibious tanks, IFVs, APCs, etc. to disembark near the beach.

The displace about 6,800 tons.

It looks to be a type 904, pennant 884 Jingpohu. Noticed it doesn't have that opening at the base of the bridge and it has a set of two life rafts on either side behind the bridge. The Type 72 IIIs don't seem to have that config. Here's a pic of that ship from a different angle and some info on the Type 904.

Too bad it's either not a priority or within budget or both; but just swapping out the 100mm gun with a FL-3000N at the rear would greatly enhance the defensive capabilities on the 053H1Gs.

thanks Jeff but i think joshuatree is correct, that is infact a Type 904 cargo ship and not a Type 072 III LST, it looks similar to the Type 072s but i didnt see it as those LSTs thats why i wondered what it was

The PLAN may be coming your way soon! I bless them with fair winds and following seas!

If PLAN ever brings the Liaoning, 052Ds and 055s stateside sometime in the future I may just take a vacation over to 32nd street base and have a looksee. It's been a while since I've been to the west coast anyway.
