It's a machine gun. You can see the ammo box attached to it. It does somewhat look the PKP.

My observation isn't great, but you are right, it is an MG. If I remember correctly, PKP's barrel can be detached quite easily for barrel change. Did PLA or PLAN decide to have something similar in concept?
