The "Zhen He" oceangoing training warship of the Navy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) with the mission of "harmonious mission—round-the-world tour" sets sail on April 16, 2012 from a military port in Dalian. It will visit 11 countries.
The PLA Navy held a grand farewell ceremony for the warship at a military harbor in Dalian on the morning of April 16, 2012. Wu Shengli, member of the Central Military Commission and commander of the PLA Navy, attended and addressed the ceremony.
Wu Shengli pointed out that it is the second round-the-world navigation tour with an interval of ten years of the PLA Navy, and it is the first time for the Navy to send a single warship with cadets mainly to execute round-the-world tasks. Meanwhile, it is an innovative practice to meet the need of Navy's transformation and cultivate cadets' oceangoing navigation capability.
According to Liao Shining, commander of this tour and deputy chief of staff of the PLA Navy, the "Zhen He" oceangoing training warship will visit ports of 11 countries including Vietnam, Malaysia, India, Italy, Spain, Canada, Ecuador, French Polynesia, Tonga, Indonesia and Brunei, and stop at the harbors of Djibouti, Jamaica and Australia, covering a total voyage of 30,000-odd nautical miles in more than five months.
Among the 308 servicepersons of the tour, 110 are cadets from the Dalian Naval Academy, and 13 of them are female cadets. They will conduct the training on such subjects as chart lettering, astronomical observation, geographical observation and so on, and conduct friendly exchange with the naval forces of the countries to visit.
During the navigation tour, some cadets from foreign naval schools will be invited to conduct the training with Chinese cadets.
The farewell ceremony was chaired by Liu Xiaojing, political commissar of the PLA Navy.
