The People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has commissioned a new Type 81A mine countermeasure vessel (MCMV) into the North Sea Fleet.

The vessel, named Yucheng and given the hull number 846, is the North Sea Fleet's second Type 081A and will be based in Dalian in Liaoning Province, according to the Chinese Ministry of National Defense. The ship will be tasked with coastal patrol duties and specifically with the protection of the fishery fleet.

The Type 81A is an improved variant of the Type 81/Wochi class. Four Type 81 and six Type 81As are currently in PLAN service.

Built by the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai and by the Wuchuan Shipyard in Wuhan, the Type 81A is the PLAN's largest MCMV. It has a full-load displacement of 1,009.5 tons, length of 67.6 m, width of 10 m and is armed with one Type H/PJ14 single tube 30 mm gun on the foredeck.

COMMENT

The PLAN has long suffered from a deficiency in MCMVs, both in quantity and quality. While the issue is well-known in China and is considered a serious weakness in its coastal defensive posture, the construction of MCMVs does not appear to be a priority.

Only two new vessels were commissioned in 2014 (including 846), two in 2013 and two again in 2012.

China have for a country with a long coast in fact enough few Minesweepers whose much small, Wosao 300 t and Type 6610 probably not very effective.

A little alone for talk about these ships which do less the buzz but usefull coz the mines are cheaper and remains dangerous...

The ship was introduced into the North Sea Fleet on 25 January at the Dalian naval base

Dalian naval base is mainly a administrative designation for several units based near of this city in fact homeported to

Lushun 11 Minesweeper Squadron which have 7 MS :
Type 6610, 812, 813 ; Type 082I Wosao, 820, 821 ; Type 081A Wochi, 845, 846 and the new Type 082B Wozang 811.
Had the Mine Layer Wolei transfered some years ago to Coast Guard.

In a very good French magazine, Type 6610 # 813 rattached to NSF retired yet 812 in may so remains max 6 ? Type 6610
Very difficult for this class to know but i have see a full list in 2008 with 18 with about one retired by year 6 can make sense.

The ship with 600 tons of drainage controls a 529 type remote control minesweeping boat with 3 drainage volume of 100 tons and also equipped with two types of H / IJM - 01 type underwater disposal Equipment.

China now has modern mine hunting ships. they are not glamorous like DDG or FFG but important nevertheless
