RIMPAC 2016 this should be the line up from China

Liaoning carrier full load of aircraft and helos
3 x Type 054A FFG
2 x Type 052C DDG
1 x Type 093 SSN
1 x Type 903 Replenishment tanker

That's 8 vessals, this is followed by a world tour! :D to say hello....

We'd probably invite one or two more PLAN ships, and only if relations don't get any worse. Your fleet would make all sides nervous (including Chinese leaders and the PLA high command) if it comes anywhere near RIMPAC forces.

Yes, as I said, it is much less likely for the Liaoning. But heck, as a goodwill visit, and bringing along 5-6 J-15s with their best pilots, by that time it is possible that they could make a good showing...and it would send a good strong message.

And...hehehe, as I said, I would sure love it oif they came all the way to the US West Coast.

Anyhow, more likely a smaller task force, but one with new vessels and strong capability. That would send the right message all around and be a great opportunity for stronger and closer cooperation in the future.

Other than USN, I do not believe there has ever been any carriers who has participated in RIMPAC before. I'm talking actual carriers not helicopter carriers.

China, Russia to hold joint military drills in the Japanese Sea

the line-up of the PLAN is: 4xDDG: 115, 116, 169, 170; and 2x054A, Yancheng, Yantai, and a supply vessle.

MOSCOW - China and Russia will hold two joint military drills in the coming two months, military officials from both countries said here Monday.

Fang Fenghui, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People' s Liberation Army (PLA), together with his Russian counterpart Valery Gerasimov, ratified relevant documents and announced the decision at a joint press conference.

Fang, who is also a member of the Central Military Commission, is paying an official visit to Russia.

According to the two officials, Chinese and Russian armed forces will hold "Joint Sea-2013" drill in Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan from July 5 to July 12, and China-Russia joint anti- terrorism military drill code-named Peace Mission-2013 in Russia's Chelyabinsk from July 27 to August 15.

The joint drills are not targeting any third party, and meant to strengthen cooperation between the two armed forces in military training, enhance their capability in coordinating military operations, so that they can play a positive role in safeguarding regional security and stability, Fang said.

In a separate meeting with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, Fang praised the good momentum of relationship between the two armed forces and their fruitful cooperation.

China, together with Russia, is willing to enhance high-level mutual visits, professional and personnel exchanges as well as joint exercises between the two armed forces, so as to push forward bilateral military ties, Fang said.

Shoigu, for his part, called for closer military exchanges and coordination between the two close neighbors and strategic partners in the context of new challenges facing regional and global peace and stability.

that's actually quite an impressive flotilla. I'm just surprised they are not all coming from the same fleet.

As for PLAN participating RIMPAC, my fear is that it would cause certain Chinese military fear to exarcebate in America. I hope whatever they send will be done in a way that enhances the naval relations.

Send the 岱山岛号 (Daishandao).

If it's just SAR and no weapon will be even remotely fired, then Sichang will be a good choice, especially with a sensor upgrade and a new coat of paint. Daishandao / Peace Ark would only make sense it were to move on and make a humanitarian tour of the pacific islands. However it's just plain weird sending a hospital ship to RIMPAC.

If there are stuff other than SAR, then perhaps send the one of those Sovremennys or may be the 052B. These ships get absolutely no love when it comes to international exercise, and 052B is so pretty looking.

It's obvious that China & Russia will conduct joint naval exercises as they are allies, and the PRC has been purchasing good numbers of equipment, vessels etc from Russia. The joint exercise would test their capabilities - no embarrassments if mistakes are made among friends. The JSDMF and other interested parties would certainly be observing these exercises as they are carried out in the Sea of Japan. It would be enlightening if the PLA-N sends ship/s to RIMPAC - it would show its confidence and naval expertise to the other invited Navies of this US-led exercise ......i.e. IF the Chinese Navy is ready to exhibit their prowess at this present time.

That's what I've been saying all this time, there's really no point to bring anything more than SAR and AO vessels because the allotted exercise package PLAN will get in RIMPAC 2014 is very restricted, in essence just a bit more than sending mere observers. If you bring warships you'd need supply vessels to tag along for fuels and stores, but AO vessels or Shichang can bring their own store for the round trip.

Doing anything more PLAN gains nothing in return.

If that is the case, it would make Shichang an excellent candidate. Perhaps sending Shichang to RIMPAC, but having a 052B or 051C as escort. This would make

Shichang

052B

or 51C

Plug a supply ship, probably nothing fancy. 886 will do.

When the US Navy Tico cruiser and the PLAN Type 054A FFG and DDG-113 docked together recently, apparently they did a little more than that as well. Perhaps a foreshadow of RIMPAC 2014 off of Hawaii.

This may present a sort of "dry run," for the PLAN involvement in RIMPAC 2014, where they will attend and participate in SAR activities...just like this.
