A couple of comments by the Guancha Gang on this new large AOE that is under construction at Guangzhou in their recent podcast:

1. The 901 AOE is the PLAN's first venture into procurement and operation of CSG-specialized AOE-type replenishment ships.
2. However, the 901 can be described as an "enlarged 903/A AOR" instead of a brand-new, from-scratch design.
3. The 901s are perfect for Kuznetsov, but barely enough/perfect for the Liaoning and Shandong (especially after reaching FOC/after MLU), and certainly insufficient for Fujian (and 004 onwards).
4. The positioning difference between the delivering (on the 901) and receiving (on Fujian) stations during underway replenishment is pretty evident when compared to the Liaoning/Shandong.

5. The length of the starboard side hull walls on Fujian is pretty long (as Fujian is essentially a stretched Liaoning/Shandong), which somewhat hinders the effective underway replenishment efforts when paired with the 901 AOEs.
6. The number of delivery stations alongside the length/span of distribution stations in between delivery stations on the 901A is shorter. This is in direct contrast with the Sacramento and Supply AOEs, where there are replenishment stations on both sides of their respective ship's funnels for both these AOE classes.

7. Combining #5 and #6 (among some other factors), this certainly results in a major deficiency, as slower underway replenishment rates meant that Fujian would be left vulnerable for longer durations than is desirable.

Feel free to add new key points from the podcast, or rectify any mistakes.

AOE-1 has 4 pipes for liquid fuel supply on the port size, but 901 have 5!

They aren't talking about the number of delivery stations, but the relative positions between the delivery and receiving stations on the 901 and Fujian during underway replenishment, respectively.

Also, don't forget that, unlike American CVN - CV-18 Fujian is not nuclear-powered. She needs to be refueled too, not just the warplanes and helicopters carried by her.

Last but not least - Replenishment definitely isn't only about refueling.

However, according to this diagram, the AOE-6 actually has only three FAS stations on the port side: 2, 8, and 10. The distance between No. 2 and No. 10 is nearly identical to the distance between the first and last FAS stations on the port side of the Type 901, both around 75m.

Of course, the AOE-6 has more RAS stations, but in terms of the distribution of refueling stations, I don’t think the difference between the two is as pronounced as it appears in the photo.

One major improvement of the latest batch of the 903A AORs over the preceding 903 and the previous batch of 903A AORs is the doubling of the number of fuel couplings (per station) for underway refueling. During each refueling, they can now plug in two hoses at the same time, which doubles the filling speed. This setup can also enable the filling of different types of fuel simultaneously.

Here's another singular fuel coupling on the 1st batch 903A AOR-902 Dongpinghu, photographed just yesterday during the exhibition. Posted by @两橙子多少钱 in the comment section underneath that above guy's post.

Suspected ship funnel structure for the new large AOR seen in Xinhua's recent news reporting footage (likely somewhat dated). This ship funnel structure looks to bear some similarity to those found on the 901 AOEs.

Translation of a 2025 paper regarding a next-generation supply ship. Worth noting the listed specs do not quite match up with the recently observed hull under construction.

While the current length, beam, and displacement of the Type 901 are already considerable, increasing them remains the most effective solution for meeting the demand for higher material payloads. For instance, by extending the hull length from 240 meters to 255 meters, while maintaining a constant beam, it would be possible to increase internal volume by over 6,000 cubic meters. This would allow for an additional load of nearly 5,000 tons of fuel or over 1,000 tons of dry cargo, representing an increased cargo capacity of more than 20 percent over the Type 901. Simultaneously, increasing the hull length would improve the length-to-beam ratio from the Type 901's 7.5 to 8.0. Although this would slightly increase the wetted surface area, it would also reduce wave-making resistance at high speeds and lower fuel consumption, a favorable trade-off that also positively contributes to achieving higher top speeds. In terms of displacement, the next-generation replenishment vessel may increase to approximately 55,000 tons, which is an increase of 7,000 tons over the Type 901’s 48,000 tons. This will be pivotal in comprehensively enhancing the capacity to carry marine fuel, aviation fuel, and ordnance.
