I would have thought we would have seen a 3rd Type 901 under construction by now, which does raise some questions. Clearly, the PLAN is happy with the performance of the Type 903As.

Still don't understand why this is the case when Fujian is about to be commissioned.
901 is suitable for short and long distance expediction with any PLAN aircraft carrier group, like visit to South America or for a long 2 or 3 months at sea. For normal deployment in West Pacifics, or as far as the Gulf of Aden, 903A is sufficient because they have a logitic base in Djibouti.

The experience with 901 for the past years probably made PLAN think that 903 is more than enough, and used of 901 in seas around China is over-killed.

While geographical distance from China is certainly an aspect, intensity of combat operations is perhaps more so. The PLAN may well need the extra capability of the 901 for operations close to China.
