very impressive vessels, but have to admit to also being surprised at the lack of an onboard helicopter flight. Is this simply because they do not have a helicopter appropriate to the Vertrep role?

The PLA overall has a high demand for helicopters and their domestic production capacity has yet to meet their demand.

That said I'm not sure how anyone is able to confidently tell whether the 901 in the picture has a helicopter onboard or not given the hangar doors are shut.

The side "doors" on the side of the hull are not hangars for UAVs but rather they are passageways to allow thoroughfare of cargo throughout the length of the ship. If one looks at the bow bridge superstructure it also has a similar passage way on each side.

PLAN semi-submersible. Via LKJ86 at the PDF. You have seen pics of this ship before but often in the background of other PLAN warships. This ship is meant to transport entire ships. Why the PLAN has a dedicated semi-submersible is beyond me as it would be the only navy in the world to do so. Even the USN doesn't have semi-submersibles; you hand this heavy lifting job out to any of the commercial semi-submersibles. There is no lack in China for mega semi-submersibles, some of which are bigger and more capable than what the PLAN has.
